Senior Backend Software Engineer
Impala
node-js aws postgresql backend senior api Jun 03

Hello! Thanks for checking out our job description for a Senior Backend Software Engineer at Impala.

In short, at Impala we're making the world a better place for guests, hotels, and online travel agents of any size. Think Twilio or Plaid for Travel.

A brief overview of what you will be doing here:

You will be a key contributor to our API and data ingestion platform, ensuring that it keeps scaling smoothly as we rapidly add more users and features.

You will be given a lot of responsibility for evolving the infrastructure and picking the right tools for the job.

You will work closely with other engineers but also product and business teams to deliver a product that’s technically first-class and loved by our customers.

You should join us if you:

  • Have experience working on a large-scale platform, handling large volumes of data throughput.
  • Have strong experience with Node.js and good knowledge of JS fundamentals.
  • Have experience working with relational and non-relational databases, as well as queuing systems.
  • Are comfortable working closely with product owners and other engineers to define the best way to implement features with high technical standards.
  • You share our organisational vision of democratising travel and enabling innovation across an entire industry.
  • You share our passion for the highest-quality code and won’t settle for anything less.
  • You thrive on excellence, autonomy and questioning conventional wisdom.

You shouldn’t join us if (we want to be as honest and transparent as we can):

  • You value stability in a product and company, over change and fast-growth.
  • You think lofty goals are better left to renovation builders.

Where and how will you work?

  • We are a remote-first and asynchronous company. This was a very deliberate, natural choice, as we prioritise preserving work-life balance and accommodating the best people in Europe, whilst also fostering diversity.
  • So we employ anyone anywhere within +/- 2h from GMT, timezone wise for now (expanding globally in the future).
  • You can check out everything we offer to set up your perfect remote work environment here.
  • And if Relocation excites you - we offer (and encourage!) that opportunity too.
  • We also have a dedicated Remote Experience Manager in the team, whose role is, amongst other things, to ensure your happiness, and help you integrate and feel empowered whilst working remotely.

What about the Covid-shaped elephant in the room?

Covid-19 has forced almost every industry in the world to adjust in 2020, and none more so than the travel industry. It is however, an exciting time to be in Travel Tech, with endless opportunities opened up for innovation, that will help jump start the travel industry. Hotels and innovators are no longer satisfied with the status quo.

Backed by some of Europe’s leading investors, we’re on the cusp of launching a product that will connect people and travel once again.

Sound interesting?

If your answer is ‘yes’ and you want to learn more, check out our Blog and our Culture Deck. Want to hear more from our VP Engineering? Read about his experience here.

Impala

Hello!

Thanks for checking out our job description for a Backend Software Engineer at Impala. We felt a little bit impersonal just diving straight in with words like “revolutionising” and “disrupting”.

As such, we apologise in advance for any clichés, tropes or sudden-insecurity-driven-panic-attacks that you might find in the description below.

All that aside though, we’re pretty proud to be listed number 2 in London’s best startups to work at in 2021.

Covid-19 has forced almost every industry in the world to adjust in 2020, and none more so than the travel industry. It is however, an exciting time to be in Travel Tech, with endless opportunities opened up for innovation and forward-thinking that will help jump start the travel industry. Here at Impala, that’s our goal! Backed by some of  Europe’s leading investors, we’re on the cusp of launching a product that will connect people and travel once again.

What is Impala?

If you’re keen to be on the frontline of creating never-before-seen travel technology and experiences, you belong at Impala.

At Impala we’re solving an exciting, complex problem that has held back the hotel industry, if not the entire travel industry, for 20 years.

Forget following emerging technology trends — we’re looking to SET them.

Impala is making the process of booking hotel rooms ridiculously easy. In short, we’re providing hotels with powerful data distribution infrastructure.

More practically, we’re making the world a better place for guests, hotels, and online travel agents of any size. Think Twilio for Travel.

We’re growing at - quite frankly - a ridiculous old clip, since closing our Series B round in early 2020.

We’re looking for self-motivated folks to expand our high-performance team. You’ll be a brilliant fit if you’re obsessed with self-development, Stripe-level quality & reliability, smashing targets, and moving at a red-hot pace (hello, start-up life!)

Where is Impala going?

We’re supported by some of the most respected investors in the business, the early-stage backers behind Deliveroo, PillPack, SecretEscapes, Zoopla, Trivago, Monzo, Travelperk, Transferwise, Airbnb, GetYourGuide, Omio, Spotify and more!

They’re on board because of the shared opportunity we have before us - revolutionising a 1.6 trillion dollar market that’s been out-of-date for 20 years.

They also share our vision of a future in which travel is seamlessly connected and relentlessly inventive.

Anyone travelling anywhere will interact with products powered by Impala. Our technology is already installed in hundreds of hotels worldwide, on six continents and categorises more than 1 billion data points.

We are a remote-first company. This was a very deliberate, natural choice, as we prioritise preserving work-life balance and accommodating the best people in Europe, while also fostering diversity.

We have loads of remote initiatives to ensure you’re fully setup !

  • Quarterly Engineering Colocation Weeks - including Hackathons, socials, and team visioning.
  • A monthly £150 office stipend - for furniture, or just to purchase things like coffee, snacks, wifi bills, cleaning, desk equipment, plants, plus anything in between.
  • Alternatively, the option to expense the cost of a Co-Working Membership up to £350 per month.
  • In addition, a generous Personalised Workspace Budget for bigger things like monitors, keyboards, desk chairs and headphones (up to £720 per year).

Remote does not mean distant

We arrange frequent get-togethers, remote socials and our famous ‘Pop Up Parties’, and we do all we can to foster a community. We consider ourselves experts in the remote culture space.

We even have a dedicated Remote Experience Manager in the team, whose role is, among other things, to ensure your happiness, and help you integrate and be empowered whilst working remotely.

About the team

We’ve always optimised for quality over quantity when expanding our team, and we’d always rather run a team lean than simply fill seats for speed.

That means that we have Star teams full of Star players, across the board at Impala -- all of whom work to mutually elevate and support each other.

We’re a group of high-performing, fast-moving, innovation-bent and product-obsessed individuals, who don’t take ourselves too seriously.

We have people on board from a range of impressive backgrounds, from big industry players (like SkyScanner, Booking.com, Secret Escapes) to incredible startups (like Revolut, Truelayer, Paddle, Peak), plus lots more.

Backend Software Engineer
Impala
node-js backend api Sep 23 2020

Hello!

Thanks for checking out our job description for a remote Backend Engineer (Node.js) (Remote)at Impala. We felt a little bit impersonal just throwing you right in there with words like “revolutionising” and “disrupting”.

As such, we want you to know that the person that wrote this job description apologises in advance for any clichés, tropes or sudden-insecurity-driven-panic-attacks that you might find in the description below.

What is Impala?

Impala is making the process of booking hotel rooms ridiculously easy. We’re providing hotels with a powerful data distribution infrastructure that transforms the way hotel guests across the world browse, book, stay and pay. Think Twilio for Travel.

We launched our original API product in January 2019 and since then have grown at - quite frankly - a ridiculous old clip. Our technology is already installed in hundreds of hotels worldwide, on six continents and categorises more than 1 billion data points. This has allowed us to bring forward our ambition to revolutionise the hotel distribution market and help empower millions of people across the globe.

We are a growing remote-first team of exceptional people split across engineering, product and commercial that have built a thriving, active, supportive community.

Where is Impala going?

We’re supported by some of the best investors in the business, the early-stage backers behind Deliveroo, PillPack, SecretEscapes, Zoopla, Trivago, Monzo, Travelperk, Transferwise, Airbnb, GetYourGuide, Omio, Spotify and more!

They’re on board because of the opportunity that lies before us - revolutionising a 1.6 trillion dollar market that’s been out-of-date for 20 years.

They also share our vision of a future in which travel is seamlessly connected and relentlessly inventive.

Our vision is that within the next two years 10% of hotel bookings worldwide will flow through Impala technology, and the product that we’re building will support the entire ecosystem of travel technology (we already have over a thousand companies signed up).

Anyone travelling anywhere will interact with products powered by Impala and to achieve this we’re growing the team extensively within the next year. Now is the most exciting time to be joining Impala as we go through a large push to scale up!

A brief overview of what you will be doing here:

You will be a key contributor to our distribution marketplace platform, ensuring that it keeps scaling smoothly as we rapidly add more customers and features. You will be given a lot of responsibility for evolving the infrastructure and picking the right tools for the job.

You will work closely with other engineers but also product and business teams to deliver a product that’s technically first-class and loved by our customers.

You should join us if you:

  • Have significant experience with Node.js and good knowledge of JS fundamentals
  • Have experience working with relational databases
  • Have experience working on a large-scale platform
  • Are comfortable working closely with product owners and other engineers to define the best way to implement features with high technical standards
