Information Security Engineer
ruby embedded saas linux cloud testing Jan 20
Spreedly is a rapidly growing, growth private-equity funded digital payments company with headquarters located in downtown Durham, North Carolina. We've developed a high volume, global solution to support our vision that the world is better with a diversified, inclusive, payment ecosystem.

Our employees help build a culture that values independence, transparency, and collaboration in a digital-first communication environment. We hope you do your best work at Spreedly and find a mature workplace striving to support the ebb and flow of work-life harmony.

It’s not enough to say“Spreedly takes Information Security Seriously” — a robust Information Security posture is at the fundamental core of what makes Spreedly successful. It’s what enables customers to trust us to securely vault 100+ million credit cards and process billions in annual payments annually.

Because Information Security is already woven into the fabric of Spreedly operations, much of the day-to-day information security tasks are federated out to those teams for whom security is already embedded into their core offering(think: security groups with Infrastructure, data loss protections with IT, secure software development practices with application engineering).  This allows the(smaller) information security team to assume more focused information security responsibilities.  To wit, Spreedly is looking for an accomplished information security engineer. For a small company, information security’s influence is far reaching and your capabilities match up to these tasks:

Vulnerability Management - Setup and administration of internal vulnerability scanning as part of a vulnerability management program.  Management of monthly PCI external vulnerability scans through remediation.

Security Testing - Coordination of semiannual information security testing with an external vendor; perform internal ad-hoc penetration testing when requested; setup and manage a(likely open source) phishing campaign; participate in table top exercises; eventually develop and execute red-team assessments.

Education & Awareness - Facilitate interactive OWASP security training for application developers, create and deliver general purpose security education and awareness materials periodically.

Secure Software Development - Perform code reviews of particularly sensitive application components(i.e.: cryptography, credential management, etc..); address and remediate“dependabot” and other SAST-based potential security defects.

Governance & Oversight - Participate in periodic reviews of security operation duties that are federated out to other groups within Spreedly; participate in the information security council(part of a security governance program). Interfacing with Auditors(PCI, SOC-2, etc..).

Incident Response / Threat Intelligence - Continue to hone rulesets and dive deep into the data to provide insights into our adversaries and suggest plans to address a threat before it occurs. Participate in information security incidents.(Spreedly already leverages a managed security provider to deliver 24x7 SOC coverage).

Pragmatic Security Advice - Provide consultation and lend expertise in a wide range of topics including strong defense-in-depth models, automating security within the CI/CD pipeline, cloud security best practices, IT risk assessments, customer security questions,  etc..

We may hire the right candidate into a Senior Information Security Engineer role, depending on candidate experience & strengths. Yes, we acknowledge that the above list is a tall ask. If you’ve fancied yourself a generalist security engineer who can“do a little bit of everything”, you are most heartedly encouraged to apply.

We think the right candidate will have most of the following:

  • Experience with cloud security(AWS preferred)
  • Understanding of security capabilities within a PCI-compliant SaaS organization(i.e.: WAF, Encryption, Identity and Access Management, etc..)
  • Proficiency in a linux environment and the common security toolsets(nmap, wireshark, burp proxy, kali, etc..)
  • Ability to clearly articulate OWASP Top-10 vulnerabilities and their common mitigations
  • Experience with SIEM and data logging toolsets(Splunk, Datadog, Sumo Logic)
  • Some programming proficiency(python, ruby, Elixr, etc..)
  • A desire to mentor other engineers and foster a collaborative environment to improve our security posture
  • A willingness to be a generalist and dig into new things you've never done before.
  • Excellent written communications, and a track record of documenting your work.
  • A pragmatic, take-action approach but you’re open to failing fast and pivoting.
  • An ability to sort out immediate priorities from the ever shifting needs of a rapidly growing organization.

What we offer:

  • Competitive salary
  • Outstanding medical and dental benefits(we pay 100% of monthly premiums for employees + families)
  • Life and long-term disability insurance
  • Medical and dependent care FSA
  • Optional vision insurance
  • Open PTO policy

  • Matching 401k plan (5% up to $5,000 yearly)
  • Monthly digital lifestyle stipend ($150)
  • Professional development opportunities including $3,000 annual stipend and access to LinkedIn Learning

  • When travel and in-office work commences
  • Remote friendly work environment. Even our local employees are remote 3 days per week!
  • Tues./Thurs. are in-office days for local employees - the rest of the week employees are free to work wherever they choose
  • Paid lunches on in-office days for local employees
  • Quarterly visits to HQ for remote employees
Spreedly is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion. We actively work to drive out even unintentional discrimination in our hiring processes via practices like blindly graded work samples, structured interviews, and diversity awareness training.

Our culture is based around our dedication to a meaningful work/life balance, and our commitment to that is reflected in the way we've structured the company, as well as the benefits and perks that we offer to employees.

Principals only, no recruiters

Spreedly is a rapidly growing, payments technology firm, with headquarters located in downtown Durham, and we’re seeking a mid level Software Engineer to help with the next exciting phase of our growth.

You’ll be spending your time working on the engineering team building functionality for customers. Building product at Spreedly is somewhat unique in that our main product is a payments API used by other developers. So “designing a UI” often means thinking through how you would want a given API to work if you were using it, and when we “work on Javascript”, it’s usually building libraries for other developers to use in their own pages. “Adding a feature for a customer” could mean working through how to securely enable a developer to do something interesting with a credit card number. Super challenging and fun, we think! And since we work with credit card data on a daily basis, thinking about security is a way of life at Spreedly, as is building sustainable processes to keep that information safe (and our auditors happy).

Must Haves

  • The skills required to refactor and add features to a large but reasonably clean codebase.
  • An ability to design components and services with guidance from your senior peers.
  • The ability to operate semi-autonomously, sorting your own immediate priorities out of the ever-shifting needs of a startup environment.
  • A willingness to be a generalist and dig into new things you've never done before.
  • Excellent written communications, and a willingness to use them to document your work as necessary.
  • A quiet confidence in your ability to learn new tech as necessary. Today we work primarily with Ruby, Rails, Elixir, Phoenix, Riak, Kafka, Postgres, Redis, and Linux ... but are always pragmatically evaluating new languages and tools

Future: Engineering Manager

Our culture is based around our dedication to a meaningful work/life balance, and our commitment to that is reflected in the way we've structured the company, as well as the benefits and perks that we offer to employees.

We've developed a powerful infrastructure that is central to the massive and growing payments market. We're growing incredibly fast too. In fact, we just raised $75M from Spectrum Equity. And we're processing over one million transactions per day.

Local applicants only, no remote candidates. All applicants must have a valid US work visa.

Spreedly is seeking a software engineering manager who's ready to jump in and manage 5-10 direct reports across ~2 functional teams. You'll also bring your experience to the table and help us continue iterating on how we do engineering and engineering management. We've made good progress in some areas - our hiring and onboarding processes being notable examples - but are regularly tweaking our processes and structure as we continue scaling the company from our current size of 50 to who knows how many multiples of that in the coming 4-5 years.

You may not yet have pure engineering management experience, but should have a proven aptitude for technical leadership and be excited to join Spreedly to support and enable the people that build and maintain our product as we keep growing. We bring the same pragmatic mentality to managing as we do to designing systems. We want someone that can come in and start being a part of those conversations, sharing your experiences and takeaways, to help us evolve our engineering management practice at Spreedly.

Responsibilities

  • You will lead a variety of cross-functional technical teams, making sure team members are getting the feedback they need to do their jobs and improve at their craft.
  • You will also represent your team to the rest of the organization, helping them understand the team's role and prioritize the set of things the team could be working on.
  • You will be doing the challenging work of management full-time from day one, and will not have critical path engineering responsibilities for any initiatives (but still need serious technical chops - see "Requirements").
  • You will be responsible for the technical quality and product cohesion of your teams' work product and should be prepared to work with relevant stakeholders across the organization to ensure both meet expectations.
  • You will collaborate with existing engineering management (and engineers) as we continue to iterate on how Spreedly does engineering as an organization.

Requirements

  • You have technical leadership experience - we need someone already comfortable with the dynamics of technical teams and delivering/supporting a technical product. This may take many forms, including non-technical management experience paired with several years of diverse technical experience, or technical team leadership experience without the human management aspect, etc...
  • As a manager, you lead with empathy, maturity, and candor.
  • You have real coding chops that allow you to support engineers of all levels as they make decisions about how we build Spreedly. While coding will not be an expectation in this role, you will need to rely on your technical experience to manage and have credibility with fast-moving engineering teams. It's not a litmus test, but if you weren't a developer in a past life this is probably going to be a stretch.
  • You should thrive in loosely structured environments. We're getting bigger, but still find our top performers are those that take responsibility vs. waiting for it to be assigned.
  • You should be comfortable thinking strategically about organizational and management topics. We don't blindly apply the best-practice du-jour here at Spreedly. Instead, we think critically about the assumptions inherent in any practice and if they're relevant to Spreedly. This should be your native mode of thinking.
We're proud of our engineering organization and can't wait for you to join us to scale and support our teams as we continue to grow.

Spreedly is an equal opportunity employer and is working to build a diverse culture that reflects the fact that everyone in the world makes payments. We actively work to drive out even unintentional discrimination in our hiring processes via practices like blindly graded work samples and structured interviews.

If you have concerns along those lines, please discuss with us sooner rather than later - we do not want you to waste time in the hiring process and get disqualified at the end if we can help it.

Spreedly is a rapidly growing, payments technology firm, with headquarters located in downtown Durham, North Carolina.  We are a stable, growth stage company with a team that enjoys working together and is remote friendly and inclusive.

Spreedly is seeking an experienced Support Engineer to join our team, learn all about Spreedly and begin contributing quickly. Our thorough API documentation, ease of implementation, and timely responses are just a few reasons our customers love Spreedly. We are a lean, quickly evolving team that isn’t afraid to reflect on process, approach, and tools to make sure we’re providing the smoothest experience for users in the most efficient way as we scale our team. We will look to you for meaningful feedback on product, user experience, internal processes, and beyond.

We are looking for a strong communicator who demonstrates the ability to prioritize, present solutions and take initiative. You listen with curiosity and a desire to learn, are patient and can see the big picture.

A typical day might include running API calls to troubleshoot a customer issue, combing code (a lot of Ruby) to verify product behavior, updating documentation to provide clarity on said behavior, and running scripts to unblock customers. Outside of the queue, you’ll have opportunities to own projects that help our team scale and develop new skills.

What you'll do

  • Research and troubleshoot implementation questions and issues, driving self-service where possible
  • Create and maintain documentation to aid in customer education and self-service
  • Assist new customers in the migration of their data to Spreedly
  • Seek out and execute new ways to optimize and automate team processes and responsibilities
  • Track feature requests, deeply understanding the customer use case, value and impact
  • Provide early feedback on feature development, training and documentation
  • Discover, analyze and communicate gaps in the customer experience

We're looking for someone with

  • Experience working with REST APIs, HTML, CSS and Javascript
  • A history of supporting technical customers
  • Excitement for how quality customer interactions drive business growth
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to thrive and take ownership in loosely structured environments
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new languages and technologies

Nice to haves

  • Web development experience
  • Experience at a growth stage SaaS company
  • Experience supporting developers
  • Familiarity with the payments industry

What we offer

  • Competitive salary
  • Outstanding medical and dental benefits (we pay 100% of monthly premiums for employees + families)
  • Life and long-term disability insurance
  • Medical and dependent care FSA
  • Optional vision insurance
  • Open PTO policy
  • Tues./Thurs. in-office days- the rest of the week employees are free to work wherever they choose
  • Paid lunches on in-office days
  • 12 weeks paid Family Leave
  • Matching 401k plan
  • Monthly digital lifestyle stipend
  • Yearly paid professional development
When applying, please include a cover letter in the Additional Information section and tell us a little bit about yourself.

Senior Software Engineer - Emerging Lines
senior ruby linux redis api Apr 13 2020
Spreedly is a rapidly growing, payments technology firm, with headquarters located in downtown Durham, North Carolina.  We are a stable, growth stage company with a team that enjoys working together and is remote friendly and inclusive.

Our list of"amazing functionality that customers will happily pay us for if we can just get it implemented..." is growing faster than we can check things off, and we need help from an experienced engineer that can hop into a high-functioning, experienced team and start learning and contributing quickly.

When you start at Spreedly (think first 6-12 months), you'll be spending 90%+ of your time working right on the product team building functionality for customers. Building product at Spreedly is a bit unique in that our main product is a payments API used by other developers. So while"designing a UI" may mean exactly what it sounds like (creating administrative and analytics tools), it often means thinking through how YOU would want a given API to work if you were using it. "Adding a feature for a customer" often means working through how to securely enable a developer to do something interesting with a credit card number. Super challenging and fun, we think! And since we work with credit card data on a daily basis, thinking about security is a way of life at Spreedly, as is building sustainable processes to keep that information safe (and our auditors happy).

What we're looking for in a senior engineer is somebody who's excited by jumping into pretty complex technical problems and making sense of them. We regularly deal with encryption, encoding, and security, all within the context of a distributed system. You don't have to be an expert in any of those aspects, but you should be really open to learning about them. Once you've gotten your feet under you and understand the domain well enough, we'd like you to mentor junior engineers and help them tackle the task at hand using pragmatic software practices. We're looking for people that are good at their job who are also are interested in elevating the people around them.

This role is unique in that you will be directly supporting our VP of New Product Initiatives. You will dive deep on our architecture, stack, and security elements, especially PCI, to support new and sometimes novel use cases either through logical extensions of our end points or through new end points. You will translate ideas into technical solutions and be able to present those to stakeholders, especially the architecture team. You are excited to push the limits to deliver exciting new features to our customers.

What We're Looking For

  • A track record of delivering well-crafted software
  • A willingness to be a generalist and the curiosity to try new things you've never done before
  • Excitement about building products for Spreedly's customers, who are primarily businesses doing commerce and their developers who are using our API's and toolkits
  • Excellent written communication skills, and a willingness to use them to document your work as necessary
  • Experience with prototyping and stubbing 3rd party partner components
  • Able to work across teams to figure out architecturally viable solutions
  • Unwilling to accept the status quo. Able to challenge limitations with potential solutions
  • The ability to operate autonomously, sorting your own immediate priorities out of the ever-shifting needs of a startup environment
  • Confidence in your ability to learn new tech as necessary. Today we work primarily with Ruby, Rails, Elixir, Phoenix, Riak, Kafka, Postgres, Redis, and Linux ... but are always pragmatically evaluating new languages and tools

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary
  • Outstanding medical and dental benefits (we pay 100% of monthly premiums for employees + families)
  • Life and long-term disability insurance
  • Medical and dependent care FSA
  • Optional vision insurance
  • Open PTO policy
  • Remote friendly work environment. Even our local employees are remote 3 days per week!
  • Tues./Thurs. are in-office days for local employees - the rest of the week employees are free to work wherever they choose
  • Paid lunches on in-office days for local employees
  • Quarterly visits to HQ for remote employees
  • 12 weeks paid Family Leave
  • Matching 401k plan
  • Monthly digital lifestyle stipend
  • Yearly paid professional development
This position is open to remote candidates, with the caveat that you must be located in the continental US and able to travel to North Carolina on a quarterly basis for all-hands weeks. Around 25% of our team is already remote, so we're comfortable with distributed teams. However, if you'll be joining us remotely, we'd like for you to also have had some experience working that way.

If you'll be joining us from the RDU area, you'll work out of our office in downtown Durham, NC two days a week, and wherever you fancy the other three days a week.

If this at all sounds interesting, we'd love to hear from you!

Remote applicants must be located in the continental US and have existing US work authorization. No applicants from CA, WA or NY.
