Role Description

Bay Area, California/Remote, US only

Web Foundation is a small team with a big mandate: developing, maintaining, and innovating the NodeJS and browser UI platform that powers Netflix.com. The Netflix website is composed of a collection of consumer UI applications and the web platform provides the infrastructure and unifying architecture to support these applications. Along with developing one of the largest licensed streaming platforms globally, our team provides support and guidance to the 50+ engineers building the Netflix UI experience on both the growth and streaming side of the business.

In this role, you will work on a large-scale NodeJS application that encompasses signup, streaming, and the member experience on the Netflix web platform. Some examples of projects you may work on include improving a JS/CSS asset compiler, optimizing network performance via HTTP/2, creating a logging library for UI clients, and identifying and fixing bottlenecks in the NodeJS build system. Along with solving complex engineering problems, you will lead projects where you’ll have the opportunity to work with many UI teams driving innovation and identifying opportunities for improvement to the UI infrastructure.

People who do well in this role are self-motivated, former UI engineers who relish complex technical challenges but find deep satisfaction in supporting their fellow developers. We look for individuals with in-depth knowledge of Javascript and who understand the nuances of large-scale codebases. A proven ability to lead projects and communicate with cross-functional partners are essential skills for this role.

We believe talent is equally distributed but opportunities are not. Our US-based team is happy to embrace remote work and our general support hours are 10am - 4pm Pacific Time. We believe safe spaces where everyone can be their authentic selves is the key to a strong team so we welcome and embrace all identities, cultures, and backgrounds.

Primary responsibilities

  • Measuring and tuning the production environment
  • Championing projects and conveying impact to partner teams
  • Soliciting feedback and building a roadmap based on partner needs
  • Evolving the web platform to be best in class

Technical Skills

  • Able to identify and componentize common abstractions
  • Passion for frontend technologies. You need to be able to distill hype from practical application
  • Eye for performance and stability of large-scale systems
  • Self-directed. Our team sets and implements our roadmap. No PMs here.

What sets you apart?

  • You have experience in GraphQL, TypeScript, and/or PWAs
  • Expert at managing large-scale web applications
  • Experience in building frameworks and libraries from scratch
  • You’re an advocate for best practices and newer technologies
  • Current/former professional experience as a UI engineer

As a Senior Software Engineer, you've probably seen quite a bit in your career, and we want to leverage all of it. When you are doing software development, you'll be doing more than just coding a ticket handed to you. You'll own the code strategy and architecture, implementation, delivery, and operation of systems, end-to-end. You'll consider testability, upgradeability, scalability, and observability throughout the development process.

Tech stack:

Our online applications use React, Redux and server side rendering using Hypernova on the frontend and a Ruby on Rails Monolith, backed by MySQL & Redis which we're working to split into a small set of services in 2021/2022. We use Sidekiq to run background jobs and Databricks environment for offline data processing. About You:

• You care about code review as both a chance to present your work and to learn from others.
• You focus on well-written, elegant solutions, not just the quick fix, and you never skimp on testing.

• You love to make a difference for users. You are curious and have a strong desire to learn and grow.
• You welcome challenges with open hands and gain a sense of ownership of your work while striving for the best coding practices.

Nice to have/Learn on the job:

• Strong understanding of modern JavaScript frameworks preferably React.

Intertoob Scanner Builder
postgresql python django celery html css Jun 12

You will join our team to help us build our security product, an attack surface monitoring engine. You will be responsible for working with the management team to design and guide the product's growth. The role will require the engineer to occasionally work directly with customers to understand their needs.

You will also get the opportunity to work with our talented team of information security consultants and collaborate with them on projects on occasion.

About the product

We are building a SaaS product that helps customers discover, manage, and secure their external facing attack surface. The product is already at its MVP stage, performing deep port scanning and probing for our consulting customers in a production capacity. We are currently in the process of making the MVP generally available. It is primarily implemented in Python using Django, celery, and other technologies in the Python stack. We run Postgres as our database along with other standard web application technologies. We perform daily deep scanning (all TCP ports of all customer addresses) and perform a number of secondary analysis probes to help identify services and provide insight into our customer's attack surface.

Who are we looking for?

We need a senior engineer capable of independently solving problems and improving every aspect of our product and its development environment. This role requires an experienced engineer that can transition seamlessly from backend distributed processing work to front end UI/UX work. You will work on every aspect of the system.

Why Carve

We are a small, stable, successful information consultancy. We don't have a lot of meetings. We are a remote first organization and have been for 8 years. We want to ship code and solve problems for our customers. You will be working with a small team that has a lot of autonomy over how you build software. You will work in an apolitical environment that prioritizes work-life harmony. No formal project manager. No scrum master. No SAFe. Just you. Your keyboard. Your wits. We mean it. If this sounds appealing to you, then you are probably a good fit.

Day to Day

  • Write code
  • Ship code
  • Keep our production environment happy
  • Listen to, and keep, customers happy

Skills & Requirements (technologies)

  • Python is a big plus
  • Distributed Computing and Asynchronous Processing
  • RDBMS (Postgres)
  • HTML, CSS, UI, UX
  • Django is a plus
  • Ansible

That section is tailored to our consulting practice, but still captures what life will be like for anyone working with the team. Please check out our careers section on our website and send in your resume via careers@carvesystems.com or through the Stack Overflow system.

Full time, remote, competitive benefits

Location: Remote only, but you must be based within the US.

Salary: Our range for this role is $100-150k. That’s a broad range because we adjust our salaries based on both experience and the region where you reside. This ensures that all of our employees have a consistent standard of living, regardless of the city they call home. When setting salaries, we look at sources like Glassdoor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

About VoteAmerica

VoteAmerica is a national voter registration and voter turnout organization, started by the founder of Vote.org. We are the single most cost-effective organization in the sector: no one mobilizes more voters per dollar spent than we do. Our work is two-fold: we pioneer new and innovative tactics, and then we scale proven systems.

Those text messages that you get urging you to vote? Although now ubiquitous, our founder pioneered this work in the US years ago. Last year, we sent over 100 million text messages. As our prior work has become mainstream, we continue to be relentlessly focused on developing the next big strategies that will get 100% of Americans registered to vote and get them to the polls. In the meantime, we’re laser focused on the 2022 midterm elections.

About the role

We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer who has significant prior experience building consumer tech products on the web, and cares deeply about our mission of increasing turnout.

In this position, you will

  • Spend your days building a better world through the strategic implementation of technology to help people register and turn out to vote.
  • Stay highly organized and use the resources you have to get things done quickly and thoughtfully.
  • Develop new products, but you won’t always be building from scratch – you’ll decide when it makes sense to adopt an off-the-shelf solution.
  • Be an integral part of the VoteAmerica team, and be responsive to and in service of the work being done throughout the organization.
  • Be in charge of a robust (and growing) codebase that dozens of high-profile organizations rely on. We’ve built some really cool things, and we open source as much as possible.

Day-to-day responsibilities

You will spend your time

  • Collaborating with the CEO and other, non-technical colleagues to plan and develop technology solutions that are used by tens of millions of potential voters each year.
  • Owning the entire tech stack, from writing code to setting up infrastructure
  • Developing new products, implementing features, fixing bugs, and taking care of technical chores as needed
  • Coding primarily in Python (Django), JavaScript (React), HTML, CSS, and SQL
  • Setting up and maintaining our tech infrastructure (AWS, ECS, Spinnaker, Lambda, Aurora Postgres)
  • Managing complex technical projects from start to finish, working both independently and with other staff
  • Deciding when to build or buy – and being able to justify your decisions with data
  • Evaluating and choosing technology vendors based on the organization’s needs and resources
  • Analyzing your work and reporting on it to the CEO and other internal stakeholders
  • Working as the only full-time engineer for most of 2021 – that means you’ll be writing a lot of code yourself – but you’ll also be involved in recruiting, hiring, and managing other software engineers in 2022 and beyond

Minimum qualifications

We require that you have:

  • 5+ years of recent experience as an individual contributor in software development for the web
  • 2+ years of experience working on an existing codebase that you personally did not develop from scratch
  • 2+ years of experience working together with other software engineers on a shared codebase
  • Experience with long-term planning and development; you have been on at least one project that took at least 6 months from kickoff to launch
  • Experience in CI and TDD – but you do not let perfect testing be the enemy of good testing
  • An understanding of the importance of documentation for your fellow developers, current and future
  • The ability to pass a background check; you will have access to sensitive, personal information about millions of people
  • A willingness to put in long hours during critical and predictable election periods. With democracy on the line, things get busy in the leadup to Election Day.

Bonus points for the following

We expect that our ideal candidate will have at least 2-3 of the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • Prior experience working on a political campaign or at a mission-driven organization
  • Prior experience managing AWS services
  • Experience coding in Python, React, and Django, specifically on a product that is live in production
  • Experience with analytics, data warehouse platforms, and ETL processes
  • Experience as an engineering lead or manager
  • Experience recruiting and hiring other software developers
  • Enthusiasm for 508 compliant designs; our tools need to be accessible to everyone
  • Interest and enthusiasm for design and product excellence

Some of the benefits of working at VoteAmerica

  • Family friendly policies: We have flexible work hours, so if you need to take 3-5pm off every day for after school snacks and homework time, that’s fine. We’ll also cover child care and pet care expenses that you incur if we require you to travel.
  • Delightful colleagues: We are a smart, fun, and dedicated group of people that want to make an impact.
  • Short commute: We all work from home and it is just the best.
  • Excellent medical coverage: Full health, dental, and vision for employees and generous employer subsidies for your dependents.
  • Generous time off: 4 weeks of accrued vacation time per year, 12 company holidays, and we shut down the office for at least a week each year so we can all recoup together.
  • Retirement plans: We offer a regular 401k and a Roth 401k because we want you to retire one day, preferably after decades of working at VoteAmerica.

How to apply

  • Submit your resume and the answers to the two brief questions that demonstrate your interest and skills. We don't require a cover letter, because you don't want to write one and we don’t want to read it.

The deadline to apply is May 13. Applications are processed on a rolling basis. We are looking to fill this role ASAP, so you should apply as soon as you can.

VoteAmerica is an equal opportunity employer. This means that we don't discriminate against people because of their race, ethnicity, sex, age, religion, national origin, marital status, pregnancy, personal appearance, veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, family responsibilities, matriculation, genetic information, or political affiliation.

Percona

Are you an advocate for the technical user? Do you recognize that not everyone has the same depth of knowledge so technical documentation should cater to all levels? If you’re able to talk about the chaotic documentation you’ve tamed in the past, from the high-level “big changes” down to the “subtle tweaks", we want to hear from you. This is a technical role so be prepared to get hands on - you don’t need to be a database expert, but if you are, even better!

Percona creates some of the most amazing database software available and ensures that it is made freely available to all who desire enterprise class functionality without the enterprise costs. What You Will Do

  • Use your creativity in communicating complex topics in approachable, engaging, technically accurate, and consistent ways
  • Work collaboratively with technical writers to hone their skills throughout the editorial process but not be a bottleneck
  • Strike a balance between creating our own content vs referencing others but in as consistent a manner as possible across the product suite
  • Work with our marketing team to ensure we are using appropriate tools to power our documentation that consider contributions from several writers, content searchability, SEO
  • Create and own our technical documentation style guide
  • Own the backlog for what is still needed and work with technical writers to ensure proper prioritization in closing the gaps while still keeping pace with existing development
  • Work with text markup such as Markdown, Restructured Text, HTML, or XML using various GUI tools and text editors

Your Experience

  • 3+ years of experience as a developmental and line editor of technical documentation
  • You have managed multiple versions of documentation for multiple projects using a version control system (Git)

Full-Stack PHP and Vue.js Developer
laravel php vue-js postgresql aws javascript Apr 16

Scalable Path is looking for a Full-Stack PHP (Laravel/Lumen) and Vue.js Developer to join the team and work on a client project. This is a remote, full-time position. The client is also open to candidates who are available part-time.

CLIENT COMPANY DESCRIPTION:
The client is a digital wellness companion for adults living with and recovering from cancer. They curate content, discussions, and events for their community, and soon will release features that allow members’ friends and family to invest in their healing through a socially responsible e-commerce marketplace.

Although our purpose is incredibly serious, our approach is not. You could say that memes are our love language, and our internal Slack channel is a reflection of the refreshing new product we’re building to bring more joy to the cancer experience.

They are an early-stage startup -- created by a solo founder and 25-year cancer thriver -- that launched in February 2020. They are currently a small team, but already have strong advisors, investors, and partners on board and thousands of people who champion the mission.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a lead full-stack software engineer, you will help the client to build high-quality, engaging, and empowering features that help cancer thrivers better cope with cancer through community support. Since July 2019, they have built four core features that will provide their community with content, conversation, a social tool, and a marketplace to serve as a companion to heal their mind and body in treatment and recovery. As they test and roll out these features, they’ll iterate and improve the experience.

The client is looking to transition their development from a Ukraine-based team to a full-time (or part-time) engineer closer to the central US time zone, who is adept at writing maintainable and reusable components using VueJS and writing backend APIs in PHP with code that is reliable, readable and uses best practices. You will be responsible for building and deploying the whole stack, outlined below. The previous team that coded the application did not build things in an optimal way, so some of the work will be to refactor and improve the existing code to make it more stable and maintainable.

The backend app is currently built in Lumen, but the client is considering migrating to Laravel in the future. They are looking for someone with either Lumen or Laravel experience, but Laravel is preferred. The frontend app is a Vue.js-based SPA so experience with Vue is a must.

RELATIONSHIPS - WHO YOU'LL BE WORKING WITH:
You will be working with and reporting to the founder and CEO who will be acting as the Product Owner, and alongside the Community Director with support from a tech advisor. The client is in the America/Chicago (-05:00) CDT time zone.

START DATE:
As soon as possible.

EXPECTED CONTRACT DURATION:
The project is expected to last approximately 3 months (and could become longer term if things go well)

NOTES:
The client's preference is to find available full-time candidates, but they are also open to candidates who have at least 20 hours/week available and are not overcommitted.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  1. - PHP (Must have)

  2. - Vue.js (Must have)

  3. - Laravel (Must have)

  4. - PostgreSQL (Must have)

  5. - HTML (Must have)

  6. - Written English (Must have)
