The Role:
Loom is looking for an experienced and empathetic engineering manager to join our one of our growing product engineering teams. This person will lead a team of engineers focused on a key strategic area of ownership, scale it up, lead it, and inspire everyone they interact with. The person who fills this role will start by working with product to understand the roadmap that needs to be built, make hiring and scope recommendations, and deliver against them. This person will have a technical background, but isn't expected to write code.

For all of Loom’s history, we have operated off of a single full-stack engineering team that worked against a single product backlog. To manage scaling up, we have split our engineers into multiple product teams, focused on different parts of our product strategy. Each of these areas is undergoing growth and we need engineering managers to help us scale our core products and infrastructure teams. The scope will start with managing 4-6 engineers spread across multiple timezones (East Coast to Pacific) and will be growing over the coming years. The engineering manager who joins Loom should have experience managing remote and distributed teams.

Responsibilities

  • You will lead and manage our product engineering teams through its go-to-market of our Loom for Teams offerings, owning sprints of iteration after.
  • You will manage and advise the team on technical house-keeping initiatives and ensure we are able to consistently invest in foundation work that supports the future needs of product while meeting product delivery timelines.
  • You will recruit, hire and train your team, building a sense of belonging and emotional safety. Growing each member from a place of empathy and good intentions.
  • You will work with other product and engineering leaders to create new and existing product success metrics and drive towards them.
  • You will help pair and brainstorm with engineers on architectural and technical topics.

What We're Looking For

  • Managed a team of 5 or more engineers
  • Managed remote engineers distributed across multiple timezones
  • 6+ years of professional full-time experience as a software engineer
  • 2+ years of engineering management experience
  • 2+ years of javascript & full-stack experience
  • Led projects with multiple stakeholders and helped drive towards clarity and decision velocity
  • Track record of hiring, retaining, and growing engineering talent
  • Track record of shipping new products and iterating on them over time
  • Enterprise or desktop client product development experience a plus

Freedom and Flexibility: At Loom, we believe work is an act, not a place. When we disengage work from a location, we can accommodate a broad range of life choices. You can choose to work from home or while you travel. If you are in the Bay Area, you can drop by our San Francisco office on 2nd and Market St. when reopens in Fall 2021. Engaging Workday: The key to an engaging workday is finding the right balance between different ways to work sync, async, text and video. Loom makes it easier for us to say what we mean without having to schedule a zoom meeting or struggle to find the right words. And using async communication allows us to free up time for deep work every day. We believe there's a place for sync time - often a conversation on Zoom is exactly what is needed. For team meetings, this ‘sync time’ is typically between 9AM-Noon PT given where the overlap of timezones where Loommates are located.

Work-Rest Balance: The way we balance the fast-paced demands of a high-growth startup and sustainability is making rest a priority. We offer a flexible PTO policy so you're able to take time off when you need it. We also go fully offline once a year between Christmas and New Year (and twice during the Pandemic). Rest is also part of the workday, not just during PTO. Taking a break for personal commitments, whether it's watching the kids or getting some exercise is natural part of the workday.

Social Connection: Relationships and connectedness matter. We are intentional about building trust and relationships through unique, shared experiences.
