Full-Stack PHP and Vue.js Developer
laravel php vue-js postgresql aws javascript Apr 16

Scalable Path is looking for a Full-Stack PHP (Laravel/Lumen) and Vue.js Developer to join the team and work on a client project. This is a remote, full-time position. The client is also open to candidates who are available part-time.

CLIENT COMPANY DESCRIPTION:
The client is a digital wellness companion for adults living with and recovering from cancer. They curate content, discussions, and events for their community, and soon will release features that allow members’ friends and family to invest in their healing through a socially responsible e-commerce marketplace.

Although our purpose is incredibly serious, our approach is not. You could say that memes are our love language, and our internal Slack channel is a reflection of the refreshing new product we’re building to bring more joy to the cancer experience.

They are an early-stage startup -- created by a solo founder and 25-year cancer thriver -- that launched in February 2020. They are currently a small team, but already have strong advisors, investors, and partners on board and thousands of people who champion the mission.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a lead full-stack software engineer, you will help the client to build high-quality, engaging, and empowering features that help cancer thrivers better cope with cancer through community support. Since July 2019, they have built four core features that will provide their community with content, conversation, a social tool, and a marketplace to serve as a companion to heal their mind and body in treatment and recovery. As they test and roll out these features, they’ll iterate and improve the experience.

The client is looking to transition their development from a Ukraine-based team to a full-time (or part-time) engineer closer to the central US time zone, who is adept at writing maintainable and reusable components using VueJS and writing backend APIs in PHP with code that is reliable, readable and uses best practices. You will be responsible for building and deploying the whole stack, outlined below. The previous team that coded the application did not build things in an optimal way, so some of the work will be to refactor and improve the existing code to make it more stable and maintainable.

The backend app is currently built in Lumen, but the client is considering migrating to Laravel in the future. They are looking for someone with either Lumen or Laravel experience, but Laravel is preferred. The frontend app is a Vue.js-based SPA so experience with Vue is a must.

RELATIONSHIPS - WHO YOU'LL BE WORKING WITH:
You will be working with and reporting to the founder and CEO who will be acting as the Product Owner, and alongside the Community Director with support from a tech advisor. The client is in the America/Chicago (-05:00) CDT time zone.

START DATE:
As soon as possible.

EXPECTED CONTRACT DURATION:
The project is expected to last approximately 3 months (and could become longer term if things go well)

NOTES:
The client's preference is to find available full-time candidates, but they are also open to candidates who have at least 20 hours/week available and are not overcommitted.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  1. - PHP (Must have)

  2. - Vue.js (Must have)

  3. - Laravel (Must have)

  4. - PostgreSQL (Must have)

  5. - HTML (Must have)

  6. - Written English (Must have)

  7. - Spoken English (Must have)

  8. - CSS (Must have)

  9. - JavaScript (Must have)

  10. - AWS (Must have)

Software Engineer
Yelp
javascript python django java ruby html Feb 17
Our full stack engineers bridge the gap between backend data and the frontend websites of Yelp. Our goal is to provide the best user experience to millions of users and we’re excited to dive into any area of the web stack to make it happen.

Full stack engineers rarely have a typical day: One day you might be writing HTML/CSS/JavaScript and another you might be discussing the best approach making our web apps work in our service oriented architecture.

Yelp engineering culture is driven by our values: we’re a cooperative team that values individual authenticity, and encourages “unboring” solutions to problems. We enable all new engineers to deploy working code their first week, and your impact will only grow from there with the support of your manager, mentor and team. At the end of the day, we are all about helping our users, growing as engineers, and having fun in a collaborative environment.

Where You Come In:

  • Design and build new features to connect Yelp with large scale businesses.
  • Implement beautiful layouts that work across all of Yelp’s platforms (desktop, mobile browsers, and mobile apps).
  • Deploy projects in a Service-Oriented Architecture, all the way from backend services to fully-featured UIs.
  • Run A/B experiments and dive into the resulting data to look for trends.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineering teams.
  • Mentor other engineers and share the skills you’ve learned.

What it Takes to Succeed:

  • Based or willing to relocate within United Kingdom
  • Deep understanding of at least one popular server side web framework (Django, Flask, Rails, Pyramid, Laravel, Express, etc.) or modern JS frontend framework (React, Angular, Ember, etc.)
  • Full-Stack engineering experience in Python, Ruby, JavaScript, Java, or C++.
  • Understanding of web security and performance best practices.
  • Comfortable working in a Unix Environment.
  • Experience with popular Python libraries/tools (Pyramid, pytest, tox, SQLAlchemy) is a plus

What We Offer:

  • Full responsibility for projects from day one, an awesome team, and a dynamic work environment
  • Competitive salary with equity in the company, a pension scheme, and an optional employee stock purchase program
  • 25 days paid holiday initially, rising to 29 with service
  • Private health insurance, including dental and vision
  • Flexible working hours and meeting-free Wednesdays
  • Regular 3-day Hackathons and weekly learning groups, always with interesting topics
  • Opportunities to participate in events and conferences throughout Europe and the US
  • £58 per month toward any exercise of your choice

Yelp values diversity. We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and consider qualified applicants without regard to Race/Ethnic Origin, Sex, Religion/Belief, Disability, Age, Sexual Orientation. Note: Yelp does not accept agency resumes. Please do not forward resumes to any recruiting alias or employee. Yelp is not responsible for any fees related to unsolicited resumes.

Software Engineer - Fullstack
Yelp
javascript python django java ruby html Jan 20

The Role

In this role your programming skills will be challenged by potentially any industry and many different issues that causes problems for our clients. With us you will

  • Architect solutions that help solve the most pressing issues for companies across the globe implementing elegant and well-documented code.
  • Make our platform, BRG DRIVETM an increasingly more competitive and compelling solution by championing and implementing new ideas and features.
  • Provide an active, creative and knowledgeable voice during project roadmap and strategy brainstorming discussions.
  • Create new features by designing and implementing proof of concepts and coordinating the final implementations.
  • Make sure our code is clean and elegant by collaborating with the team during code review to maintain standards and code base knowledge.
  • Dev your passion into reality. GAT believes in giving you time to chase after something that interests you even if it doesn’t make a direct or immediate impact to our work as we believe it provides innovation and inspiration into all that we do.
  • Learn far more than you knew before you started working with the team and share those insights with the team.

About you

  • Be a committed team player who works well with various stakeholders to ensure the best outcome.
  • Flexible and creative enough to accept that client needs can be very different, and they change. You thrive – not cringe—at this reality and enjoy finding a way to work in the confines and the requirements of such a technical solution.
  • Have strong spoken and written communication skills including the ability to talk to non-dev people and explain what you are doing and why you do it the way you do.
  • Have a passion for learning new things and pushing the envelope.
  • Taking pride in own work and demonstrating attention to detail.

What is on the table

  • Competitive salary and benefits package
  • Working as part of a remote and dynamic DevOps team

  • Custom remote working travel kit to allow a flexible lifestyle
  • Yearly training and certification budget

This role will report directly to the CIO and will manage and grow the Software Development Division, providing leadership and direction to the team.

As the Division Manager and Lead Architect your primary responsibilities are:

  • Management of a team of software engineers, including task planning, user story assignments, estimating and code reviews;
  • Preserving, protecting, and evangelizing the immutable facts of our ERP and the approach we’re taking to deliver it, i.e. Start with the Data Model, Restful API & CRUD-based; microservices architecture; web-based, multi-tenant, and linked data models supportive of graph;
  • Providing leadership to your Group Leads and driving key technical projects and decisions;
  • Planning, execution and success of our software projects (all of which entail the building and continuous improvement of our proprietary ERP);
  • Hiring future team members and managing the performance of existing team members within your Division;
  • Close collaboration with Product Management to scope out timelines of product deliverables, while ensuring we’re meeting deadlines and producing the best possible product;
  • Defining our infrastructure, environments and computing needs of the division at the right time and right scale;

ABOUT YOU:

We are looking for someone who has at a minimum of 3 years of experience as an Engineering Manager, Technical Director, Team Lead, or the equivalent who has both directly managed engineers, worked closely with product stakeholders and has successfully managed projects, deliverables, and timelines while keeping their hands dirty writing code into production as a full-stack engineer. you will have a minimum of 10+ years experience shipping high quality, web-based applications and pushing production code for every level of the stack. You are very comfortable with an API-first environment and deploying features regularly through CI/CD pipelines.

You have 5+ years of experience working in PHP, Laravel, MYSQL, and REST APIs; you have experience with DevOps and at least 5+ years developing and deploying consumer or enterprise applications at scale. Experience with development and / or architecture of a multi-tenant web application is highly preferred. Additionally, it is preferable, but not required, that you have experience working with software that manages physical goods. At a minimum, you must have deep interest in and knowledge of the eCommerce landscape.

You can lead, inspire, manage, and motivate team members in a calm manner and provide technical direction and guidance. You have worked in agile development and can easily prioritize your work according to effort and impact. You can have both deep engineering and business conversations with different levels of the leadership team.

You love complex challenges, you’re driven by problem-solving and delivering solutions with the utmost quality and you abhor defects. If you don’t know how to do something you use existing documentation and your resourcefulness to dive-deep and figure it out. As such, you are able to work autonomously, but know when to pull in other stakeholders. This means you’re not afraid to speak up when requirements aren’t clear or they require additional context and details. You recognize that Product Management will define what we do, while you and your team will define how we do it.

The Role

We are searching for a talented and experienced Full Stack Engineer to join our Engineering team, located in the timezone UTC +8 or UTC -3 hours.

The Engineering team at SHIFT is a fully remote team from the ground up. We live in different countries but work great together, building the software that powers the transformation that SHIFT is all about. You will become part of our team, taking on the variety of tasks that makes full stack engineering enjoyable—and keeps our software dev engine humming. You will have a big impact on SHIFT’s success by enabling us to provide white-glove service to our clients, who are generally large Fortune 500 companies.

You

We're looking for a remote (UTC+8/UTC-3) Engineer who can hit the ground running in a fast paced nature of a growing startup, as a member of a collaborative engineering team. As a Full Stack Engineer you will turn user stories into software solutions, able to deliver vertical slices that cover frontend, API, backend, and DB.You should be a critical and creative thinker, and have excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

You should have an ownership mindset and be a self-starter, always striving to deliver the highest-quality solution for our clients, while having the ability to see how to balance quality vs the pragmatic reality of quickly putting delivered features into users’ hands.

Lastly, it is important that you are excited about working with a remote Engineering team. The Business team is located in North America, primarily Toronto, but the Engineering team is worldwide and plans to stay that way.

We are primarily looking for remote candidates in the UTC +8 or UTC -3 timezones, for example, UTC + 8: Australia, Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Russia, Taiwan, UTC - 3: Argentina, Bermuda, Brazil, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Chile, Falkland Islands, French Guiana, Uruguay - among other relevant locations.

As a Full Stack Engineer you can expect to:

  • Actively communicate in our written forums like work tickets, slack, and github PR comments
  • Actively participate in our regular team video calls to get the most out of a limited medium
  • Perform code reviews, and respond to having your code reviewed
  • Develop new front-end product features in TypeScript using React, with a focus on creating a seamless user experience with our tools
  • Develop the backend REST API in Laravel framework PHPInteract with the DB via Laravel’s ORM (Eloquent) in code, as well as via SQL when investigating issues
  • Occasionally (rarely), interact with legacy server-rendered Laravel blade pages and frontend - snippets rendered by MithrilJS in coffeescript
  • Write automated tests for your work to support confident future code changes
  • Work on high value, rapid development projects that allow SHIFT to evaluate new hypotheses and prototype new ideas

We’re looking for you to have the following qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 - 5 years experience in a full stack engineering role, but if you’re more senior that’s great too
  • You are ideally located in UTC+ 8 hours or UTC -3 hours to work collaboratively with our current remote team
  • We are also open to someone with front-end experience who is smart and eager to hone their back-end skills
  • Experience building web applications, preferably within an enterprise context
  • You write understandable, testable code with an eye towards understandability and maintainability
  • You are a strong communicator - explaining complex technical concepts to designers, support, and other engineers is no problem for you
  • A creative thinker with strong problem-solving abilitiesIt would be great if you had experience at a startup and/or with a remote engineering team (but it’s not necessary)

What you’ll get from SHIFT

In addition to competitive compensation, equity, health benefits and an annual learning grant, we offer our team the opportunity to:

  • Learn from a seasoned entrepreneurial leadership team
  • Solve relevant, complex and uncharted business problems
  • Opportunity to own projects and strategic priorities in a high learning environment - regardless of seniority
  • Build relationships across sectors, functions and time zones in a supportive and people-first environment
  • Contribute to the evolution of teams by helping to refine our digital tools and products

SHIFT is an equal-opportunity employer and we value diversity at our company. For Toronto-based roles, we are not able to offer relocation at this time.

Our Values

At SHIFT, we embrace and actively cultivate the following values:

-Own it: We believe that anyone can be an owner and everyone at SHIFT must be an owner. A SHIFT owner is someone who: is willing to set a hard goal that they don’t necessarily know how to meet, will work to achieve that outcome despite inevitable obstacles, will solve the underlying problem vs. ticking a box to complete a task, asks for feedback and thought partnership, and communicates key learnings and their process throughout.

-Debate to great: We want the best ideas, ambitious goals and decisions. Almost no idea or goal is the best in its original form. We believe collective problem solving, debate and conflict sharpens ideas, ambitions and decisions into better versions, and can help everyone improve. Ship fast, learn fast: We seek the shortest path to get to better outcomes. Mid-Senior Full Stack Developer - Django/VUE.js
django javascript postgresql full stack vue-js php Jun 09 2020

Why you should work for ROI Developers

Frequent Rotation Across Projects - If you find yourself thinking "I wish I could switch projects every 3-6 months" or "I enjoy learning new APIs", you're the right type of personality for our team.

The company specializes in custom software development. Essentially, we are a plug and play solution for mid-size businesses that require a talented team of developers. Any business in the world can benefit from software, which ensures your exposure to a wide range of industries and requirements as new projects come in. The common thread in all that variety is that our projects relate to MVC frameworks.

Your income

This is a full time position paid on an hourly basis ($25 per hour for 7+ years of experience, $20 per hour for less). Said in another way, you have more control over your income.

Earning money based on hourly pay means that you earn money in the exact same way that the company does: billing for time. Paying a salary would put competing incentives between the developer and the company. Instead, we tie your incentives directly in line with the company. So long as you work within our 25-35 hours per week guidelines, your income is 100% tied to how much you work.

Do you do an amazing job meeting customer expectations with a minimal number of bugs? That's called job security. Customers always have their favorite developers. Make a name for yourself with quality work.

ROI Developers also believes that connecting income to time worked maximizes team quality. The kind of people that want to collect a salary and drag the team down are not attracted to the company. That means you will work with talented colleagues that are motivated to make you, the code and the entire team better.

Quality of Life - Your work week totals 25-35 hours with 30 being the ideal amount. You can work at any time of day so long as your work hours are consistent and evenly spaced across 4-6 days per week. One of our teammates works from 11 pm - 5 am in his local time zone because that's when he wants to work. The company cares more about you working when you're at your peak mental state rather than the time of day when you work.

Meetings are strictly limited to when they are necessary. Because your income is based on your time worked (which includes meetings), the company is incentivized to value and protect your work time.

An Engineer's Environment - Test driven development comes first. We do not build features until existing code passes all tests. You are assigned tasks within the repository, at which point you are expected to own the problem and fix it. Because we operate in a "no micromanaging" environment, we need a teammate that sincerely cares about the impact his/her engineering decisions will have across the project.

Version control is paramount. Commits to a project are not meant to be a fancy save button. Commits tell the team, "I have tested this feature and it's production ready."

The team practices either daily or continuous releases, depending on the project.

Nobody wants to get yanked out of bed to fix fires (we are not IT people on call!). Steady commits keep us looking sharp and polished to clients and keep emergencies to a minimum. We don't merge major changes or features from development branches on Fridays, for example. It's better for us and it's better for our customers.

Small Teams - The size of the company is 5 total, which we expect to number 7-8 by April. Your work is meaningful and appreciated. And because of the small team size, you have the ability to significantly influence the solutions within a project.

Technologies

Django 3.x and related apps:

  • Django REST Framework
  • Celery, RabbitMQ

HTML5

Javascript:

  • VUE and Vuex
  • Bootstrap

Docker, Git, Cordova

PostgreSQL

Must haves

You must have 2+ years of direct experience with Django. Django is our MVC of choice and the technology that all developers in the organization share in common. In order to be considered for our senior level pay rate of $30/hr, you need to make your case for why you deserve to be a senior level developer.

Most Django developers also work in the frontend using Javascript and HTML5. Given the choice between an expert in Django and an expert in Javascript, we would choose Django. That said, our teammates need to come on board with a strong foundation in Javascript.

Experience using Git for version control.

Nice to haves

webpack, Docker, expertise across multiple Javascript libraries, years of experience working with multiple types of databases (especially PostgreSQL). Laravel and PHP are nice to make keep the team as a wide-ranging MVC shop, but not at all necessary.

Day to Day

We intentionally avoid chatter apps like Slack or Skype. Most questions do not require an immediate reply, making threads within the repository's issue tracker our preferred method of communication. The biggest challenge for any developer is to minimize interruptions to help you spend most of your workday in the zone (ie, deep work). Keeping chatter restricted to the issue tracking system keeps conversations organized and minimizes distractions. Genuine emergencies are handled over phone calls or WhatsApp.

About 80%+ of your time is spent architecting or writing code. The remaining time is spent on team communication - reviewing proposed solutions from teammates, clarification on requirements, etc.

The types of projects and problems you encounter are everything related to MVC frameworks. Identify business problems, abstract them into models and serve the content through a browser or mobile app.
