Dragos has an opportunity for a Senior Quality Engineer in Performance to join our growing team of talented Engineers making great contributions to our mission of Safeguarding Civilization!  As a Quality Engineer in Performance, you will help establish networked application performance metrics for our platform and document and communicate deltas and suggestions for improvements.  You will be responsible for the design and execution of tests that simulate real-world customer scenarios, as well as potential worst case scenarios, and come out of it with data and a path forward driven by that data.  In addition, as part of a larger (and growing) quality organization, you will be responsible for helping ensure team members bake performance testing into their work streams.
 
Our headquarters is in Hanover, MD and you have the flexibility of working from home or out of our office.

Responsibilities

  • Work with Agile Scrum/Kanban embedded QE Team members to define and execute performance-related tests for the platform as a whole and each subcomponent 
  • Analyze output and log files from tests with the goal of establishing baselines and measuring of deltas to proactively characterize and report on system/subsystem performance
  • Author test cases/suites in Test Rail, proactively review test cases written by other Quality Engineers
  • Communicate status of platform performance at any snapshot in time, to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Requirements

  • Strong UNIX/Linux skills, from administrative/management perspective
  • Demonstrated expertise with and understanding of TCP/IP, including routers, switches, firewalls, and familiarity with the OSI Network Model and how it relates to Linux/UNIX components.
  • Understanding of x86 architecture, hardware/software interactions, and impacts that HW configurations may have on software performance (i.e. NUMA node optimizations, CPU core affinities, etc.)
  • Organized, articulate, and a team-player
  • Prefer Strong experience IXIA, T-REX, or Spirent, for traffic generation, 
  • Prefer Experience with administration, monitoring and tuning of big data application stacks and pipelines, i.e. Elastic Search, Mongo, Nifi, Redis, RabbitMQ

Performance Objectives

  • 30 days: Have a basic understanding of Dragos’s platform, dependencies, and knowledge of how the Quality Practice works at Dragos
  • 90 days: Be able to autonomously conduct continued performance evaluations and provide input and suggestions on configuration improvements
  • 180 days: Proactively sends reports to interested parties and able to answer questions from a technical and nontechnical standpoint
  • 365 days: Seen as SME in performance, proactively finding areas in platform for driving and improving performance, working with Product on Engineering to evaluate and incorporate these changes.

Social Media Environment and Internet Replication (SMEIR™), a product of IDS International Government Services, is a digital training solution that provides a full-range, free-play, immersive, realistic and scalable operational practice environment in which warfighters simultaneously train on full-spectrum cyberspace operations and social media analytics during integrated and multi-dimensional exercises.

IDS International is seeking a Mid to Senior level Full Stack JavaScript Software Engineer to join our growing team and build out the next generation of our internet simulation platform, called SMEIR. The Software Engineer will replicate various websites and social media platforms that will be used for cyber-training exercises. IDSI’s engineering team uses a modified Scrum/Agile process. Candidate must be at ease working in an agile environment with little supervision. IDSI uses Slack, Jira and Git for project and software management. Our main office is in Arlington, VA with remote opportunities available for the right candidate.   

Responsibilities:

  • Use software development languages including Javascript, Node.js, SQL and tools to write, edit, maintain, and test computer software as part of a synthetic cyberspace training environment.
  • Follow the software development lifecycle (SDLC) to plan, design, build, test, and deploy software applications, ranging from websites and mobile applications to web applications, video games, and back end API architecture.
  • In addition to creating new software, improve and maintain the working order of existing software.

Required Qualifications:

We are a small engineering team based in Newport Beach, CA and Columbus, OH. We prefer someone who can work at our offices but are willing to fill this position with a remote candidate. What matters most to us is finding someone who is professional and mature and requires as little oversight as needed in terms of management.

A typical week will start off with a quick meeting to review the current iteration and plan out the week. Thereafter, we are heads down and work on our tasks via our project management system and conventions. We are looking for a person who not only can grok the job at hand but know the best approach to doing it right. We are primarily a Rails shop but have some JS apps as well, so we’ll want a person who is very knowledgeable on Rails best practices from coding to hosting.

We focus on results and would rather allow freedom of leading a project as a professional vs. having to be managed the entire way.

  • Work closely with the Design and Development team to create high-quality web apps
  • Design and develop testable production-level code
  • Write effective and powerful APIs
  • Develop efficient algorithms and data-structures to improve key business logic and processes

The Opportunity
We’re looking for an expert to help us build a cybersecurity course. 
This will be an online 6- to 9-month program designed to help students find an entry-level blue-team cybersecurity analyst job within 6 months of graduation. You’ll set the vision to ensure we’re teaching all that is needed to succeed as a cybersecurity analyst, in the different domains of policy, networking, and technical tools. Your work will include designing instructional modules and exercises so students can both learn and practice applying fundamental cybersecurity concepts, helping them shine during interviews and ultimately on the job.

This role will be a part-time contract role for a duration of ~4 months starting immediately. We estimate a workload of roughly 20 hours per week and ask that you’re available to work synchronously during PST hours on weekdays. Given the current pandemic, this will be a remote opportunity. This is a paid engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Set the vision for effectively teaching the key cybersecurity concepts required to secure an entry-level position
  • Work with a Springboard instructional designer to define learning outcomes and structure a curriculum of learning modules, exercises, or other teaching methods to realize that vision

The essence of platform engineering at Bonsai will be to operate and support Elasticsearch at scale. The emphasis here is more on the scale part than the Elasticsearch part, but you’ll definitely become intimate with Elasticsearch and Lucene along the way.

There are several key components involved. First we have Elasticsearch itself. Then a handful of proprietary plugins to enhance its functionality and support its operation. From there, the networking stack that handles connections and does diagnostic tracing. Telemetry and observability across the board. Finally our packaging and deployment, and internal services for fleet orchestration.

If that sounds like more than one person’s job, we agree. Your future colleague Dan is going to be particularly stoked to work with you.

You can think of this similar to a “SRE” position. When there’s an issue with performance or reliability, you’ll dig in and trace requests and analyze from load balancers down to memory managers, and help code and ship a patch to make it visible, and make it better.

There’s a heavy dose of Java and Linux involved in all of this, but if you have some experience in systems programming in other languages, we can certainly teach all of that.

We’re a small team, but we punch above our weight in systems engineering and operations. Our original founder was previously a database engineer at Twitter when they went through their years of crazy scaling. This position does involve wearing the metaphorical pager in a rotation with other engineers on the team. We’re on call not because we expect to be woken up, but so we’re accountable to shipping systems that never need us to!

Some example projects
  • Moving decentralized server-initiated threshold alerts into a centralized time-series stream analysis service.
  • Building a continuous delivery service that performs gradual fleetwide rollouts of new and updated services, subject to canary stages and operational verification at certain checkpoints.
  • Build and package new versions of Elasticsearch OSS, and update our suite of plugins to use the latest plugin interfaces, including customer-supplied proprietary plugins.
  • Troubleshoot a customer-supplied Elasticsearch plugin with a performance hot-spot, trace the problem to a likely location and provide support and guidance to improve efficiency.
  • Diagnose a server-side agent as having problematic memory usage, and port it from Ruby to Crystal to improve performance and resource usage.
  • Collaborate with Product engineers to build a data pipeline to support customer-facing metrics graphs.
  • Assist our customer support by triaging operational incidents and performing incident response.
The ideal engineer

We’re looking for someone experienced, who’s ready to dive in. You don’t need to be an Elasticsearch expert — you’ll learn all of that on the job. We’ll have plenty of conversations about how Lucene is really a data structures library optimized for disk access.

Experience with Java is more helpful, although C, C++ and Golang would be a good starting points. We’ll also be looking for solid fundamentals in networking, disk access, memory management, and schedulers.

Several of our systems make heavy use of Netty, as does Elasticsearch itself. So familiarity with Netty or evented systems will be helpful.

The ideal teammate

Requirements

  • Experience operating Linux (configure, tune, and troubleshoot both RedHat and Debian-based distributions)
