Back End Developer | Go | remote within UK or Cambridge
go php mysql postgresql linux backend Jun 26

Third Light is hiring a Back End Engineer —a Go developer or someone who has been mixing Go into their work or personal projects and is readynow looking for a primarily Go-based role.

You may work remotely - joining a team that already includes remote workers - or from our Cambridge office.

This is about delivering sophisticated new product features for release to our state-of-the-art software service that helps people manage and share their digital media files easily – features that deliver immediate positive impact for our global user base.

We're a small and expanding software development team, building an enterprise application with a highly-polished UI, using the very best and latest techniques. We employ an iterative, design-led process where everyone on the team gets a say.

Our product is a single-page JavaScript application loosely-coupled to a back end that's built on Go microservices and legacy PHP. We use microservices for all new features and Go is our chosen language to do this. In parallel we are migrating our older codebase to Go microservices.

We're agile and manage our work using a gentle Kanban process with daily stand-ups and we encourage a lightweight, productive approach to development. We can allocate projects that build upon your current strengths, and we offer a personal development approach that you may help shape.

Your opinion and expertise will be valued from day one.

Upcoming projects within the team

  • Integrate with social media to provide a publishing platform that can also gather user-generated content
  • Provide AI and machine vision to detect duplicate files and provide auto-tagging and OCR
  • Create a metrics & reporting system to track usage of features, document downloads and image views
  • Implement a full SFTP client & server interface to integrate with SLR Cameras and legacy systems
  • Extend workflow and automation microservices to create intuitive automated channel publishing tools
  • Automate orchestration of microservices in our product e.g. exploring Kubernetes
  • < your idea here! >

We're looking for

  • Someone who's positive about Go and wishes to embrace this exciting language
  • Proven back-end coding skills using either PHP or Go and for Linux
  • Demonstrable interest in Go—from industry, self directed learning or personal projects
  • An appreciation for continuous unit and integration testing
  • Skills in designing, building, testing and maintaining web services, ideally microservices
  • Ability to work with a large, live, production codebase
  • Familiarity with relational databases e.g. MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • Familiarity with CI/CD, preferably within a Git-based workflow
  • Optionally, familiarity with porting an OO monolith to a microservice architecture
  • Someone considering mid level back-end jobs such as: Go Developer | Go Microservices Developer | Golang Developer| Node.js Developer | PHP Developer | Python Developer | Back End Engineer | Back End Developer etc.

You may bring—or like to gain—skills exploring any of the following

  • Containers, containers as services and automated container deployment
  • Large-scale storage, manipulation and streaming of multimedia
  • Machine intelligence, visual recognition or similar numerical computation
  • Production experience in systems configuration, monitoring, logging, and metrics gathering

Our current technology mix - we'll help you get up to speed

Go (aka Golang) | JavaScript | PHP | NGINX | MySQL | SockJS | RabbitMQ | Debian | macOS | VMware | Git | Jira | Bitbucket | Bamboo | Slack | Basecamp

Salary and benefits

  • c.£50,000— negotiable —we're keeping an open mind
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • Personal development plan that you can shape for related training/certifications/conferences
  • 25 days holiday + public holidays | flexible hours | bicycle and free car parking | on site cafe | good coffee and tea | fresh fruit | choice of high end workstation | an adorable Beagle to brighten the office

Working remotely: The Third Light development team embraced remote working a few years ago and now has workers in more than one country. We strive to provide a friendly, fun, supportive remote-working culture and we refine our processes to make remoting easier. We will welcome your ideas and contributions. We provide computing equipment and cover reasonable costs incurred from running a home office.

Normally, as a new starter, you'd come to the office for a few weeks to get to know each other. Due to Coronavirus you will no-doubt join us remotely, at least temporarily, which will bring interesting challenges in how best to introduce you to, and integrate you into, the development team—how to train you, how to help familiarise yourself with our systems and ways of working. We see this as an interesting challenge so we’re working it out at the moment. We're planning a fully-remote ‘onboarding’ process with team meetups, one-to-one sessions and pair programming as well as online social gatherings for you when you join.

If you'd prefer to primarily work from our office this option will still be available to you after lockdown.

Castor
react-js php oop saas javascript mysql Jun 19

Who is Castor?

Castor is one of the fastest growing healthtech startups. Our mission is to bring medical research into the digital age. Why? Because medical research is still largely run using free-text, paper and spreadsheets.

By enabling our users to capture high quality data and making it machine readable, we are fundamentally changing the broken evidence based medicine process. You’ve found yourself a company with a true purpose. Learn more at castoredc.com and on our Life at Castor instagram channel.

How is Castor supporting the Coronavirus crisis?

Castor has joined the global fight against the Coronavirus by making our research data capture system available for free for all COVID-19 research projects. As of May 25th, Castor is supporting more than 200 COVID-19 studies across the world.

Castor’s EDC team

Castor Electronic Data Capture (EDC) is the core of our platform. It’s also our largest product in terms of customers and codebase, with thousands of researchers worldwide using our EDC to build their study databases and securely collect their research data.

The EDC team focuses on bringing clinical research into the 21st century. Together, the team contributes to developing exciting new features, powerful APIs that connect our platform to Electronic Health Records and complex algorithms to support versioning of study data and metadata.

We also want to be honest. With all this new code, the team also ‘get their hands dirty’ to resolve some of the technical debt we’ve been accumulating over the last few years.

Remote work

At Castor, our entire team is currently working from home. We’ve realised our regular office setup may not be practical in the months and, potentially, years to come.

Although this comes with new challenges, we are beginning to build a great remote working culture. We believe expanding our horizons and hiring on a remote basis is key to continuing on our mission of delivering faster, smarter medical research.

For that reason, this position is remote-only (from anywhere in similar working timezones). As we don’t have world-wide payrolling solutions in place, we expect that you have the capability to invoice us as a and can arrange your own taxes with your government.

At Castor our stack, well...it's stacked! With PHP at it's heart, Castor EDC uses Doctrine, React, ExtJS and MySQL, runs on ansible- and terraform-managed infrastructure, builds via CircleCI, and is monitored via Tideways, NewRelic and Prometheus. To realise our vision and ensure that our products and tools embrace the frontier of innovation, you’ll:

  • Designing, debugging and coding for a growing network of medical researchers
  • Analysing performance data and optimising bottlenecks
  • Deconstructing user requirements to model optimal, scalable, solutions
  • Working on automated toolchains to construct and integrate our applications

What you’ll bring

A repertoire of coding comprehension! Being a skilled software engineer, you’ll know how to decrypt and improve a (legacy) codebase whilst keeping yourself abreast of current trends. You’ll have:

  • Significant practical experience with PHP, design patterns, OOP, and automated tests
  • Working knowledge of Javascript, preferably with React and/or Sencha ExtJS
  • Experience in building web-based applications (SaaS)
  • Knowledge of web security, common vulnerabilities and their mitigations
  • A creative mindset with the ability to help solve challenging domain problems

What you’ll learn

It’s a crucial time for Castor. We’re on ‘full power mode’ and scaling-up at an exponential rate. For you, the opportunities are endless:

  • How to build robust ‘bulletproof’ security which protects patients medical data
  • Working with a diverse group of developers from all over the world
  • To share your ideas openly and influence the growth of a true scale-up company
  • Be involved in maximising the impact of medical research and improving healthcare

How do we say thank you?

At Castor we truly live and breathe our core value, believing we can 'achieve anything with a healthy and happy team.' With this in mind, we encourage a truly flexible approach to working and time to rest. You can also use our company subscription to Calm for a little meditation or relax time. • Debug production issues across services and levels of the stack
  • Participate in on-call rotations, along with every member of the engineering team
  • Solid understanding of system design, including the operational trade-offs of various designs
  • Solid programming and troubleshooting skills. You may be called upon to help with systems written in Java, Go, Python and Node.js. You won’t be expected to know everything, but we are looking for people who can dig through a codebase for debugging and commit tactical fixes as needed.

Qualifications:

  • You have 5+ years in technology with at least three in a Cloud Engineer, DevOps or SRE role.
  • You can work from our office in Baltimore each day, but we would consider candidates that are based in Austin, TX or can work from our Los Altos, CA office each day as we have staff in those markets.
  • You’re a storyteller with compelling stories about that time you learned something new in order to solve a problem for your company, and stories about the times you helped your team mates skill up
  • You have powerful stories about the failures and mistakes you’ve made and the lessons learned. You share them as cautionary tales with your team mates.
  • You love to code and deploy at scale.
  • You have a desire to make the Internet a safer place.
  • You had a passion for tools like Ansible and Cloudformation, but are moving on to tools like Terraform, Kubernetes and Helm.
  • You approach problems from a product perspective, thinking through how the user will interact with what you're building.
  • You have strong communication skills. You ask questions, let others know when you need help, and tell others what you need. You write things down so you/someone else on your team can do them.
  • You're a problem solver. You believe the best work is the result of finding the simplest solution to complex challenges. We see simplicity as the greatest expression of intelligence and responsibility.

Backend Software Engineer, PHP
php mysql wordpress react-js javascript backend Jun 03

WordPress doesn’t try to keep its users inside walled gardens, a rare thing in a world that is dangerously moving away from the open web. Instead, WordPress gives them the freedom to build a business website, an online store, or a personal blog – the way they like it. Big sites or small, using the community-run open-source project or Automattic’s WordPress.com, vanilla or customized with hundreds of plugins, WordPress users always get to own and control their data, their expression, and their freedom.

What have we worked on recently?

  • Gutenberg is a new block-level editor with clean abstractions for users, too, not just developers.
  • Jetpack is a plugin that brings cloud-scale features to self-hosted sites and our latest addition is Rewind, think git for WordPress sites.
  • WooCommerce is the most popular e-commerce platform on the web.
  • To view more of our recent work, check out our longer product list on Automattic.com.

How do we work?

  • We’re kind to each other and our users – we strive to build a positive, supportive, and inclusive culture of cohesive teams focused on delivering value to our customers.
  • We work as a global and distributed workforce resulting in a unique way of working built around our creed
  • We offer flexible work arrangements allowing our team members to work when they feel best.
  • We open-source! We’re cool with open-sourcing everything except passwords, or secret keys.
  • We ship often, deploying many times daily with the help of peer code review, continuous integration, and our global workforce in over 70 countries.
  • We welcome collaboration, and you can be involved in any discussion across our many communication channels.

Enough about us, let‘s talk more about you. The Software Engineer position might be a good fit if you:

  • Have production experience with several programming languages. We mostly use PHP and JavaScript at Automattic – you should either be familiar with them already or the idea of using them on a daily basis should not be a blocker for you.
  • Have experience working on a large-scale system. Making it faster, more scalable, and fault-tolerant.
  • Know about systems architecture.
  • Are highly collaborative and you love participating in code reviews and discussions about architecture, or design.
  • Are passionate about and experienced in software development; in particular, advanced PHP knowledge is a plus.
  • Are knowledgeable about design patterns and testability; having experience with testing frameworks, performance testing, and unit testing is very welcome.
  • Are thoughtful about product design, with good user experience instincts.
  • Are open and able to travel 3-4 weeks per year to meet up with your teammates in person.

Extra credit:

  • WordPress programming experience.
  • Open-source contributions or contributions to programs designed to help underrepresented people enter the tech field.
  • Experience working on accessibility.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript.
  • Data analysis experience, and understanding of how analytics can help with product decisions.
  • Knowledge of tooling and build systems.

Speaking of interests and skills, here are some areas in which you can grow and have further impact in the future at the company:

  • Leadership – we offer a variety of leadership options to those who have an interest, including becoming a team lead and managing releases.
  • Learning and development – we have a generous personal development budget and encourage you to grow your skills through courses, books, and conferences.
  • Architecture – we encourage developers to develop expertise in the systems they work with, guide their evolution and mentor other developers working on them.
  • Engineering effectiveness – we believe in helping other developers become more effective through tools, practices, cross-team collaborations, and process improvements.

These are exciting times at Automattic and you’ll have a unique opportunity to shape the future of our products. Join us! We look forward to hearing from you.

Curious who works in engineering at Automattic? Meet our Code Wranglers – Brandon, Jeremy, Mark, Jennifer, Roy, and Kat!

We know applying to jobs can be stressful and we want to ease the stress by giving clear expectations upfront about our process.
