The role

We’re a startup with a huge amount of blue sky in front of us and it is now down to us to execute. We're looking for highly competent full-stack devs who have a passion for their craft, who are team players, and who are excited to contribute to the growth and culture of the company.

In this role you will be reporting to the CTO and working in a small but rapidly growing engineering team.

We believe the difference between a good developer and great developer is the ability to code for, and work well within a team, so we highly value empathy and emotional intelligence.

The tech

The technology is current and inherently exciting. In order to kick goals, you will need to be comfortable operating within these technologies and practices.

  • React/Typescript in the frontend
  • Python/Django in the backend
  • GraphQL for our APIs
  • Automated testing
  • Continuous integration and continuous deployment
  • Heroku and AWS (containers)

Demonstrated Agile experience is important, and if you have prior experience with API integrations and Test-Driven Development, that’s a bonus.

What you get to do every day

  • Architect and implement effective and efficient solutions that deliver business outcomes and help create delightful user experiences
  • Deliver high quality, clean and testable code that is a pleasure to inherit and maintain
  • Help others do the same through rigorous code reviews

  • Help build a kick-ass team and a culture of excellence!

Who we’re looking for

  • An owner. We get excited about the things we’re building. We see opportunities, and we’re chomping at the bit to make them happen; we don’t want to wait for someone else to do them. We love people who see themselves as the agents that can make things happen; owners of their work and their goals.
  • A generalised specialist. Someone who has put in the hard yards and has built a deep understanding of a topic. There won’t be much we can teach you in your area of specialty, however we also seek someone with a range of auxiliary interests and competencies; a generalised specialist.
  • A pragmatist. We love technology, it’s hard not to. But we are here to solve problems, and as a senior developer you recognise that technology is your toolbelt, creativity your fuel, and business outcomes your objective.
  • Someone socially aware. We work in a team, within a company. We work with contacts across various client companies. We talk with our clients, and really listen to their feedback. As a senior developer you’re not only technically capable, but you also enjoy working with a team and building a learning environment.
  • A funlover. We’ll be spending a lot of time together, let’s make sure we have fun!

On the technical side

  • 4+ years of professional software development experience, ideally building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers
  • A strong understanding of design principles and patterns, data structures, reliability, maintainability and security
  • A knack for building flexible, modular systems that are still simple and easy to understand

Our collaborative, flexible and autonomous way of working will provide an excellent platform for you to grow, learn and explore new technologies and tools, whilst driving us forward to make our vision a reality.

ABOUT THE ROLE
You'll spend an initial period with our Engineering team learning our methodologies and stack before moving to work alongside our machine learning client team, supporting them by delivering expert advice and bespoke working solutions for clients and potentially for onward deployment into our product solutions. You’ll also work with the Product teams as we integrate new ideas into our machine learning platform or tackle a particular business need. You should expect to work closely with platform-engineers to provide ideas and generally get stuck in to help make something work as it should.

You’ll be responsible for driving software engineering best practice at all times. Designing and developing features across all levels of web-based systems (full-stack) and rapidly prototyping, exploring and testing ideas. It will involve building and iterating on new features with users to help solve real problems.

We understand that there may not be such a thing as ‘the perfect candidate’ and no single person can do it all. However, if this sounds like you, or what you believe you can achieve, and you're looking for somewhere you can thrive, we would love to hear from you.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Strong technical skills across multiple levels of a web-app stack - we don't expect everyone to be an expert in every aspect of frontend, backend & devops, but you’ll need to have skills & experience across multiple levels.
  • At least 4 years of commercial software engineering experience across all parts of a software development life cycle
  • Experience working in an iterative Agile environment
  • Fluent with at least one of our core programming languages (Java, JavaScript/TypeScript or Python)
  • Experience with at least two of the core technologies in our stack (React, Spring, Flask, PostgreSQL, Kubernetes, Machine Learning)
  • A degree in a technical discipline such as Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, etc. or equivalent commercial experience.

GREAT TO HAVE

  • Wider software engineering skills (e.g. scripting, ops, ui/ux, design, databases, etc)
  • Experience architecting and designing complex software systems
  • Experience working closely with users, working out what to build and why
  • Understanding of Machine Learning, AI or Data Science, including experience deploying ML in production or commercial applications
  • Familiarity with other technologies in our stack (protobuf/grpc, Apache Arrow, Parquet, Redux, AWS, Node)
  • Experience with modern numeric or big data frameworks, such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, Spark, Numba, Kafka

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU?
As well as joining a talented and fun team of scientists, engineers, storytellers and problem-solvers dedicated to innovation, ethical AI, the pursuit of knowledge and making the world a better place? Well, we believe in investing in our people, encouraging career and personal development through training programmes and performance assessments to help you to be the best at what you do and allow you to grow with the company.

You’ll enjoy a competitive compensation package, an awesome work environment in Summertown (Oxford, UK) for those who choose to be office/part-office based. We have a strong social scene, even if by Zoom, and some of us can't wait to get back to our face to face team lunches, pub Wednesday's, office snacks and our sorely missed coffee machine, however we also offer great benefits such as:

  • Flexible and remote working
  • Professional and personal development
  • Private healthcare (including dental and optical cover)
  • Pension
  • 25 days holiday (excl bank holidays)

Salary: Our range for this role is $100-150k. That’s a broad range because we adjust our salaries based on both experience and the region where you reside. This ensures that all of our employees have a consistent standard of living, regardless of the city they call home. When setting salaries, we look at sources like Glassdoor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

About VoteAmerica

VoteAmerica is a national voter registration and voter turnout organization, started by the founder of Vote.org. We are the single most cost-effective organization in the sector: no one mobilizes more voters per dollar spent than we do. Our work is two-fold: we pioneer new and innovative tactics, and then we scale proven systems.

Those text messages that you get urging you to vote? Although now ubiquitous, our founder pioneered this work in the US years ago. Last year, we sent over 100 million text messages. As our prior work has become mainstream, we continue to be relentlessly focused on developing the next big strategies that will get 100% of Americans registered to vote and get them to the polls. In the meantime, we’re laser focused on the 2022 midterm elections.

About the role

We are looking for a Lead Software Engineer who has significant prior experience building consumer tech products on the web, and cares deeply about our mission of increasing turnout.

In this position, you will

  • Spend your days building a better world through the strategic implementation of technology to help people register and turn out to vote.
  • Stay highly organized and use the resources you have to get things done quickly and thoughtfully.
  • Develop new products, but you won’t always be building from scratch – you’ll decide when it makes sense to adopt an off-the-shelf solution.
  • Be an integral part of the VoteAmerica team, and be responsive to and in service of the work being done throughout the organization.
  • Be in charge of a robust (and growing) codebase that dozens of high-profile organizations rely on. We’ve built some really cool things, and we open source as much as possible.

Day-to-day responsibilities

You will spend your time

  • Collaborating with the CEO and other, non-technical colleagues to plan and develop technology solutions that are used by tens of millions of potential voters each year.
  • Owning the entire tech stack, from writing code to setting up infrastructure
  • Developing new products, implementing features, fixing bugs, and taking care of technical chores as needed
  • Coding primarily in Python (Django), JavaScript (React), HTML, CSS, and SQL
  • Setting up and maintaining our tech infrastructure (AWS, ECS, Spinnaker, Lambda, Aurora Postgres)
  • Managing complex technical projects from start to finish, working both independently and with other staff
  • Deciding when to build or buy – and being able to justify your decisions with data
  • Evaluating and choosing technology vendors based on the organization’s needs and resources
  • Analyzing your work and reporting on it to the CEO and other internal stakeholders
  • Working as the only full-time engineer for most of 2021 – that means you’ll be writing a lot of code yourself – but you’ll also be involved in recruiting, hiring, and managing other software engineers in 2022 and beyond

Minimum qualifications

We require that you have:

  • 5+ years of recent experience as an individual contributor in software development for the web
  • 2+ years of experience working on an existing codebase that you personally did not develop from scratch
  • 2+ years of experience working together with other software engineers on a shared codebase
  • Experience with long-term planning and development; you have been on at least one project that took at least 6 months from kickoff to launch
  • Experience in CI and TDD – but you do not let perfect testing be the enemy of good testing
  • An understanding of the importance of documentation for your fellow developers, current and future
  • The ability to pass a background check; you will have access to sensitive, personal information about millions of people
  • A willingness to put in long hours during critical and predictable election periods. With democracy on the line, things get busy in the leadup to Election Day.

Bonus points for the following

We expect that our ideal candidate will have at least 2-3 of the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • Prior experience working on a political campaign or at a mission-driven organization
  • Prior experience managing AWS services
  • Experience coding in Python, React, and Django, specifically on a product that is live in production
  • Experience with analytics, data warehouse platforms, and ETL processes
  • Experience as an engineering lead or manager
  • Experience recruiting and hiring other software developers
  • Enthusiasm for 508 compliant designs; our tools need to be accessible to everyone
  • Interest and enthusiasm for design and product excellence

Some of the benefits of working at VoteAmerica

  • Family friendly policies: We have flexible work hours, so if you need to take 3-5pm off every day for after school snacks and homework time, that’s fine. We’ll also cover child care and pet care expenses that you incur if we require you to travel.
  • Delightful colleagues: We are a smart, fun, and dedicated group of people that want to make an impact.
  • Short commute: We all work from home and it is just the best.
  • Excellent medical coverage: Full health, dental, and vision for employees and generous employer subsidies for your dependents.
  • Generous time off: 4 weeks of accrued vacation time per year, 12 company holidays, and we shut down the office for at least a week each year so we can all recoup together.
  • Retirement plans: We offer a regular 401k and a Roth 401k because we want you to retire one day, preferably after decades of working at VoteAmerica.

How to apply

  • Submit your resume and the answers to the two brief questions that demonstrate your interest and skills. We don't require a cover letter, because you don't want to write one and we don’t want to read it.

The deadline to apply is May 13. Applications are processed on a rolling basis. We are looking to fill this role ASAP, so you should apply as soon as you can.

VoteAmerica is an equal opportunity employer. This means that we don't discriminate against people because of their race, ethnicity, sex, age, religion, national origin, marital status, pregnancy, personal appearance, veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, family responsibilities, matriculation, genetic information, or political affiliation.

Portchain is a cloud-based AI software, empowering container carrier and terminal teams to collaborate, analyse and design operations plans to get container vessels through terminals faster and more efficiently. Lower cost. Faster planning. Better outcomes

Container Shipping: An industry with huge potential to make a difference

90% of all goods globally are transported through a container. The largest container vessels are 400 meters long and can transport more than 23,000 containers at a time. The container shipping industry is the backbone and enabler of global trade, but it suffers from operational inefficiencies. 50%+ of all container vessels are delayed coming into port, 4.6% of sailing time is waiting time outside of the port, and key planning processes are done manually on a global scale. This results in high operational costs, lost revenue, and unnecessarily high greenhouse gas emissions (if container shipping was a country it would be the 6th largest in terms of CO2 emissions). At Portchain, we work closely with our customers to reduce operational complexity and optimize planning through software and innovative analytics.

The role

We are looking for skilled and independent Senior Software Engineers to join our software engineering team that is focused on building a modern and user friendly platform, where users in the shipping industry can make quick decisions and stay informed through organised data.

To achieve this we use data, mathematical modeling, machine learning, and optimisation to help our users get full transparency on their operations and allow them to make better decisions.

You will be an important part in a self-managing team that both builds the features, creates the needed architecture and works hard on creating a good work culture that allows you to work in the way that is best for you.

Important: We will only be reviewing and accepting applicants in and near Europe.

The team

We are a 25 person strong team made up of 9 nationalities, with half the company and most of engineering working remotely. On the engineering team we have an average of 9 years experience, so you will get experienced to work, learn and spar with. You can read more about the team and our remote culture on our website: https://www.portchain.com/careers.

We believe that a good software engineer is one who has the freedom to explore good solutions and has a team that lets the best argument win. We aim for having autonomous teams that co-own the platform and its technical evolution.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation of end-to-end features from specifications and designs
  • Problem solve architectural decisions with the team
  • Maintain quality and ensure responsiveness of applications
  • Maintain clean code and help build code conventions
  • Understand and follow security and data protection best practices, like f.x. OWASP top 10

Role Requirements

  • 5 years minimum of professional experience in Software Engineering
  • Experience with any or all of the following technologies: Node.js, React, TypeScript
  • Full stack proficient - Nobody is perfect in all, but you’ve dabbled in the different domains.
  • Solid analytical and problem solving skills paired with the ability to develop creative and efficient solutions
  • Proficiency in automated unit and integration tests
  • Previous professional experience working remotely
  • A deep understanding that we always have to navigate between the immediate impact of a feature and the technical debt incurred by its implementation. You are able to carefully weigh the pros and cons and make a choice in favour of the company and the team

Bonus skills

Not required, but areas we want to be better in, so if you can tick any of those below, we could use that.

  • Experience with building B2B and consumer quality products from start-up/scale-ups
  • Deeper understanding of network and application security and maybe also security when it comes to CI/CD
  • Architectural experience with Cloud services like AWS, Google Cloud and Azure
  • DevOps/SRE experience

The role

We’re looking for a Software Support Engineer who cares deeply about enabling non technical colleagues with their daily operations through the development of tools, applications, code improvements and scripts which aim to improve, automate or completely remove those same operations. Someone with a passion for problem solving and debugging the most obnoxious of bugs.

This is an opportunity to join a team of talented problem solvers, looking at untangling a complex problem and finding a simple solution. Through your work, you will have a direct impact on how people get paid, by helping us take Pento to the next level and building seamless experiences for our customers.

Our tech stack

We build and host our application and tools using modern and reliable technologies that our team knows and trusts, including React, GraphQL, Golang, Node.js, PostgreSQL, Docker and Kubernetes.

What will you be doing?

  • You will work closely with customer support/success to troubleshoot and address our customers' queries regarding functional and technical issues with Pento;
  • You will build new and improve existing support tools and processes;
  • You will document identified issues and their solutions to help with future efforts;
  • You will collaborate with the product engineering team in an agile manner;
  • You will take operational responsibility for the code that you write over the entire software development life cycle;

We'd love to hear from you if

  • You have a few years of professional experience in software engineering/technical support;
  • You have strong communication, collaboration and organisational skills;
  • You have experience with scripting and/or building applications in one or more programming languages. Preferred languages: Go and Node.js;
  • You are familiar with troubleshooting issues through querying databases, APIs and application logs;
  • You enjoy building internal tools and automating processes with other colleagues as your main customers;

What can you expect?

  • Competitive salary;
  • Tech and equipment of your choice;
  • The opportunity to join an early stage tech company on an incredible trajectory;
  • An equity option plan so you can benefit from our success;
  • Remote working and flexibility.

What it's like working at Pento ‍

We're a technology company, not an accountancy, payroll bureau, or similar. We build beautiful payroll software that automates all manual workflows and we usually help companies cut 50-80% off the time they spend on payroll. That means no spreadsheets, no e-mails, and no manual bank transfers. We've built an easy-to-use software product, that does all of this automatically.

You can see a short video by our co-founder and CEO, Jonas, here.

Why now is a really exciting time to join

  • The UK payroll process hasn’t been disrupted since… ever
  • Every company runs payroll, but very few companies are happy with their current process
  • Pento makes payroll up to 80% more efficient (we are probably conservative here)
  • We already see strong inbound demand from companies all over the UK
  • Our customers love Pento - our NPS is above 70 (check our Trustpilot by the way)

Our team
