Engineering Lead / Manager
Impala
rest javascript react-js mongodb manager Feb 21

Hello!

Thanks for taking a look at the job description for a remote Engineering Lead / Manager at Impala. We felt a little bit impersonal just throwing you right in there with words like “revolutionizing” and “disrupting”.

As such, we want you to know that the person that wrote this job description apologises in advance for any clichés, tropes or sudden-insecurity-driven-panic-attacks that you might find in the description below.

What is Impala now?

Impala makes building travel software incredibly easy. We provide hotels with a powerful data management platform that makes connecting to software, hardware and room distributors extremely easy. Think Twilio for Travel.

We launched in January 2019 and since then have grown at - quite frankly - a ridiculous old clip. Our technology is already installed in hundreds of hotels worldwide, on six continents and categorises more than 1 billion data points.

We are a growing team of exceptional people split across engineering, product and commercial that have built a fantastic community.

Where is Impala going?

We’re supported by some of the best investors in the business, the early stage backers behind Deliveroo, PillPack, SecretEscapes, Zoopla, Trivago and more. They’re on board because of our vision - revolutionizing a $1.6 trillion dollar market that’s been out-of-date for 20 years.

Within the next two years, 25% of hotel bookings worldwide will flow through Impala technology and the product that we’re building will support the entire ecosystem of travel technology (we already have over a thousand companies signed up).

Anyone travelling anywhere will interact with products powered by Impala and to achieve this we’re growing the team to 50 people within the next year. So now is the most exciting time to be joining Impala as we go through a large push to scale up!

A brief overview of what you will be doing here:

  • As an engineering manager and team lead, you will be accountable for the effectiveness of your team and personal development of the developers
  • You will be technical and hands-on, a key technology leader in team. You will share responsibility for the security, reliability and quality of a set of services.
  • You will Ideate, develop and iterate new features alongside a product manager, enabling our technology partners to add value to hotels and travellers
  • You will work directly with internal stakeholders, part and parcel of working in an autonomous, metric-driven development team

You should join us if:

  • You have experience leading a development team, and managing or mentoring others
  • You feel comfortable working closely with product owners, designers and other stakeholders
  • You are extremely collaborative, Impala’s engineering team is not political, everyone has great ideas and should be open to input. We have no space for brilliant jerks.
  • You are passionate about customer experience and building high-quality maintainable software that looks and works fantastically.

Where will you work?

This is a remote position (all of our engineering team and some of our other staff members are distributed). This means you can work from anywhere +/- 2 Hours of London, timezone wise (and less than a 3 hour flight). As part of that:

  • We offer an office stipend (you can furnish a home office or choose a coworking space near you).
  • We give you an additional significant start-up equipment budget for things like monitors, keyboards, headphones etc.
  • You’ll travel once a quarter to meet the rest of the engineering team somewhere in Europe.
  • You’ll have a budget to travel to team socials if you’d like to meet everyone in person more frequently.

Please note, we only accept candidates in Western Europe because of timezone and travel time differences. We make no exceptions (we don’t have time to!).

What you will get in return?

  • We’re in the top 14% of companies in the UK for holiday that we offer, at 36 days.
  • We also offer Impalans one Unsick day per year.
  • Impala believes that great people should be able to focus on developing mastery of their skills, even if they don’t want to manage people. Here you’ll be able to access 3.5x the average annual raise, even staying in the same role
  • We invest in your development and will support you to realise your potential.
  • We offer all engineers a Weekly Recess Hour. This is an hour to take off and step out from work and invest in You Time! Lawn mow, yoga, walk or movie anyone?
  • We offer an extended lunch break option, meaning you can take an extra hour lunch break, and we trust you to make up for it later in the day.
  • We offer a stipend to set up your ideal place of work. You can choose between the option of £150 per month to build out your home office, or we’ll pay for your membership at a coworking space near you up to £350.
  • In addition, we give you a special Personalised Workspace Equipment budget for things like monitors, keyboards, headphones or desk chairs.
  • You’ll travel once a quarter to meet the rest of the team in an engineer colocation week, somewhere in Europe.
  • You’ll have a Social Budget to travel to/from & stay in London for a night, for our monthly Impala Social.
  • We’ll organise socials around your area with other remote workers.
  • We have a Health & Wellbeing scheme in place, offering you the option of a monthly gym membership reimbursement each month, or a health food voucher each month; access to HeadspaceVitality health insurance (UK only); plus the chance to win a massage monthly. Plus loads more.
  • Perkbox. A platform designed to help you to live a better life by personalising, managing, delivering and measuring the best company perks in real-time.
  • You’ll be working somewhere that encourages collaboration, is transparent, has a strong focus on wellbeing, and doesn’t just pay lip service to it’s Core Values.

Backend Engineer
Density
react-js python django backend Feb 12

When someone installs Density in a location, they get access to real time, accurate people count. The experience is magical to a customer, but the process involved in accomplishing it is complex. Density has counted 13 million humans, and that number is growing exponentially. We are seeking a talented backend engineer to help architect a suite of web-based products to transform that data into insight.

The software systems that support Density are foundational: our customer facing APIs and applications, the systems that manage and orchestrate our fleet of devices, and the internal tools that keep our organization running smoothly. We put a high value on the infrastructure that supports our systems, and love approaching problems through research, prototyping, and experimentation. We are not afraid to embrace new technologies, but are mindful in what we choose.

As an organization, we understand the importance of design, focusing on fundamental problems, and decentralizing decision making. As an engineering team, we design, build, and test with simplicity and scalability in mind. As individuals, we take ownership in our work and decisions. We’re looking for someone with a deep understanding of the web who shares these ideals.

This position reports to Density's Director of Software Engineering.

What you'll work on

  • Lead backend development on internal and customer facing projects, utilizing Python and Django
  • Build APIs and data delivery mechanisms for applications such as web dashboards, alerting & health systems, mobile applications, and third party integrations
  • Monitor, understand inefficiencies, and improve the data pipeline
  • React to customer needs and feedback through tight-looped, iterative development
  • Contribute to open source initiatives
  • Document and teach best practices across our stack

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years industry experience building and scaling web applications and APIs
  • Deep experience with Python and Django
  • Experience building data-centric applications, including analytics pipelines, report generation systems, and alerting & health systems
  • An understanding and appreciation for application performance monitoring and profiling tools
  • A desire to define, document, and teach web engineering standards
  • Strong writing skills, with experience crafting clear and concise documentation
  • A motivation for constant learning

Icing on the cake

  • Experience with statistical analysis and trend data modeling
  • Experience with building applications using ES6, React, and Redux
  • A deep appreciation for design
  • A strange obsession with counting people (or what you can do with the resultant data)

While we have offices in Syracuse (NY), San Francisco, and NYC, we embrace and have built a culture around remote work.

React/Node Developer
react-js firebase sass next.js javascript css Jan 10

Are you a kick-ass javascript developer tired of rushing through client work, instead yearning to dive deeper into a smaller number of projects? Do animations, interactions, and user experiences delight you? Are you disciplined enough to work in sprints, but also mature enough to work independently?

Undefined LLC is hiring a full-time React / Node developer to work on customer-facing and internal websites and web applications. Say goodbye to the agency or freelance rat race - you’ll be working exclusively on a small number of company-led projects and initiatives.

Our Projects

So what types of projects will you be working on?

  • A custom e-commerce site built in React and Next, powered on the back-end by Firebase and WordPress
  • A custom admin dashboard for a native app with more than 250,000 user accounts and 5,000 daily users, built in React and Next, and powered by Firebase
  • A shopify e-commerce site with a custom theme built on Shopify’s themekit and React
  • An app microsite built in React and Next, powered by Firebase
  • Various landing pages and microsites generally built in React and Next, powered by Firebase and/or WordPress as a CMS
  • Internal reporting and communication tools that may need some FED love

The Daily Grind

What’s a typical day for an Undefined developer? We work in sprints; so, you’ll be in daily communication with your dev team members and leadership. But we also work like animals; so, you’ll be free to focus on getting your work done. Your week will begin with a Sprint Planning Meeting, you’ll have daily stand-ups during the week, and it will end on Friday with a Sprint Review.

Though most of your time during the week will be working on tasks and bugs, you’ll have the opportunity to step up regularly (if that’s your thing) and be involved in higher-level design and direction decisions. We say “if that’s your thing” because some people love that, others don’t. And we want you focused mostly on what you love.

But What Am I Really Doing?

Sometimes, you’ll have an entire Sketch design and you’ll be building out the FED. Other times, you’ll have the basic design requirements (fonts, colors, etc) and some functionality requirements (credit card form, shipping address), and you’ll design and build the page or component in browser. Or maybe you're writing a script to traverse Firestore to pull some data.

Hey - we just added some new functionality to how subscriptions are set up or we’re building out the functionality to export customer lists from our admin portal. You’ll FED those components, and also bug fix them should something break or not work as expected.

Our Tech Stack

You must know React and Firebase. We use React heavily in our front end development. You must also be great - not good, great - with CSS, SCSS, or some similar styling. We currently use SCSS modules in React, so you should be comfortable with SCSS even if you want to convince us that something better exists.

You must also have a great - not good, great - eye for CSS animations, timings, transitions...everything animated in the browser. If we (or you) get a crazy idea to animate a user interaction or drop in a little delighter, you’ll be the one to pull it off.

Experience with WordPress and/or Shopify is a plus.

What You Need To Qualify

This is a full-time position or contract-to-hire position depending on your situation and needs. To qualify:

  • Must be a US citizen or resident alien
  • Proven work experience as a FED with React
  • Proficiency working in git and terminal
  • A portfolio and/or repo of actual work experience

How To Apply

Send us your details - we need to see your work and resume or similar doc. We’ll reach out to qualified candidates via email to ask some questions or for a phone conversation.

We remove unnecessary obstacles so you can work directly with customers who are developers just like us. Our teams are software crafters care about doing things right the first time. You will probably be surprised at how collaboratively we work both inside and across our teams, even though our teams work remotely. We take pride in our hard-earned, friendly, consensus-building, and ever-improving remote-first culture.

Working at Octopus may be different from any other job you’ve had before. In many companies, software engineers are treated as an expense to reduce or a revenue stream to increase. In contrast, Octopus is a product company built from the ground up by engineers, for engineers. At Octopus your effort will be appreciated because you are adding value to our products, which are our assets. Also, our customers are people just like us. This makes it easy to relate to our customers and understand what they care about most.

Octopus is not done. Many of us came to Octopus thinking “it does everything I want, how can I possibly help?” Continual changes in the software landscape present a constant stream of opportunities for us to explore. We will continue to make Octopus the best tool in its class by increasing the value Octopus offers, pushing into new territory beyond deployment automation, all the while making Octopus easier and more delightful to use for both simple and complex scenarios alike. If you like solving distributed computing problems, building delightful user experiences, or anything in between, you can do that with us.

Keep reading if you want more details about the job. Otherwise, click the button to apply and have a real conversation with one of our engineering leads.

  • Improving our onboarding experience for new customers to help them become successful with Octopus sooner.
  • Working on small improvements which make the Octopus user interface more usable and delightful for experienced customers.
  • Changing our TypeScript + React source code hosted in GitHub, most of it in the open, collaborating on a pull-request, then shipping a release to customers around the world via an automated build, test, and delivery pipeline, often within the same day.
  • Handling an inbound support ticket from a customer, helping them succeed with Octopus, or offering advice to a customer in our community Slack workspace.
  • Pairing with another software engineer or a support engineer to help them reproduce a tricky problem, helping them understand the inner workings of the Octopus user interface in the process so they can be more helpful to even more customers over time.
  • Pairing with another engineer on a Zoom call to solve a technical problem or design a new feature.
  • Fixing a bug using an approach like red-green-refactor to prevent customers from experiencing that bug again.
  • Improving our documentation to help customers discover solutions for themselves.

What does this mean for you?  You get to work from where you need or want to work. Each team member is provided the tools, infrastructure, and support to create a productive, professional work from home office environment. We observe and operate standard East Coast working hours to support the majority of our clients and our teammates. While travel is part of the job requirement to service clients and team build, we ensure it is asked for and planned as thoughtfully as possible.  Travel amounts do vary by engagement, but in this role/project, a full-stack developer can expect the travel to be very light.  MAYBE once per quarter, if that.
