python javascript saas aws Jul 09
Atlassian is continuing to hire with all interviewing and on-boarding done virtually due to COVID-19. Everyone new to the team, along with our current staff, will temporarily work from home until it is safe to return to our offices.

Atlassian Site Reliability Engineering is a rapidly growing group within the organization. We are in the process of building our teams, tools and systems as part of Atlassian's mission to build the best SaaS services in the world. This is a truly exciting team to join - we are currently or are planning to be involved with every technical team across Atlassian.
We enable Atlassian to go fast by providing real-time feedback on production systems. We work side by side with the product family and platform developers to maintain and improve services and performance. We live the company values with a strong customer focus and possess a healthy sense of urgency. We are a heavily data-driven team, utilising a variety of data collection, enrichment, analytics and visualisations to learn about our complex systems.
We're looking for a difference maker - an engineer with need to take data, turn it into insights, and follow these insights up until they turn into concrete action. If you like mastering a domain and going deep, this role is for you.
We value having a proven focus on sharing learning experiences. If you can prioritize three tasks and coordinate multiple people in the heat of an incident, we need you. If you love the benefits of process and methodical improvement, you will love it here. If you want to keep your head down, headphones on and bash out code to support the team, we have a spot for you too.
If you're a great developer with an inclination towards data analysis and data-based decision making, or a star business analyst / product manager / data scientist with skills in data analysis and at least some scripting and coding chops, then we should talk.

On your first day, we'll expect you to have:

  • Work with our seriously large volume of data to understand trends and behaviours
  • Investigate and establish funnel and experience metrics to validate the quality of our releases and features
  • Programming skills (e.g. Python, JavaScript and Java. Python, etc).
  • Proficiency in SQL and understanding of database/data warehousing concepts
  • Strong critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills
  • Spread the love of the measure - build - measure - learn cycle within Atlassian
  • Organized, passionate about the details, and a self starter

It's great, but not required, if you have:

  • Knowledge and experience of reporting and BI tools (e.g. Tableau, R, SAS, etc)
  • Hands-on forecasting and financial modeling skills in Excel, with experience in SaaS/recurring/subscription revenue models
  • Experience working on Amazon Web Services (in particular using EMR, Kinesis, RDS and the like).

To support you at work (and play) we offer some fantastic perks: ample time off to relax and recharge, flexible working options, five paid volunteer days a year for your favourite cause, an annual allowance to support your learning & growth, unique ShipIt days, a company paid trip after five years and lots more.

Senior Platform Engineer
One More Cloud   $0K - $0K
senior golang java ruby c saas Jul 02

Bonsai is hiring a Senior Platform Engineer to help build, scale and support the underlying technical platform that help us manage thousands of Elasticsearch clusters on AWS and GCP. This is a 100% remote full-time position. Salary ranges from $120 to $130k, based on experience.

About the job

“Hey, we’ve put your add-on in production. Good luck. Don’t crash.” —Heroku

The essence of platform engineering at Bonsai will be to operate and support Elasticsearch at scale. The emphasis here is more on the scale part than the Elasticsearch part, but you’ll definitely become intimate with Elasticsearch and Lucene along the way.

There are several key components involved. First we have Elasticsearch itself. Then a handful of proprietary plugins to enhance its functionality and support its operation. From there, the networking stack that handles connections and does diagnostic tracing. Telemetry and observability across the board. Finally our packaging and deployment, and internal services for fleet orchestration.

If that sounds like more than one person’s job, we agree. Your future colleague Dan is going to be particularly stoked to work with you.

You can think of this similar to a “SRE” position. When there’s an issue with performance or reliability, you’ll dig in and trace requests and analyze from load balancers down to memory managers, and help code and ship a patch to make it visible, and make it better.

There’s a heavy dose of Java and Linux involved in all of this, but if you have some experience in systems programming in other languages, we can certainly teach all of that.

We’re a small team, but we punch above our weight in systems engineering and operations. Launching at the right place and time dropped us into the deep end of early adopters, and we’ve been scaling ever since. Fortunately our early team was heavily engineering minded. Our original founder was previously a database engineer at Twitter when they went through their years of crazy scaling. We also hosted some massive sites like Pinterest whose 100x growth on our platform was a true trial by fire.

This position does involve wearing the metaphorical pager in a rotation with other engineers on the team. We’re on call not because we expect to be woken up, but so we’re accountable to shipping systems that never need us to!

Some example projects
  • Moving decentralized server-initiated threshold alerts into a centralized time-series stream analysis service.
  • Building a continuous delivery service that performs gradual fleetwide rollouts of new and updated services, subject to canary stages and operational verification at certain checkpoints.
  • Build and package new versions of Elasticsearch OSS, and update our suite of plugins to use the latest plugin interfaces, including customer-supplied proprietary plugins.
  • Troubleshoot a customer-supplied Elasticsearch plugin with a performance hot-spot, trace the problem to a likely location and provide support and guidance to improve efficiency.
  • Diagnose a server-side agent as having problematic memory usage, and port it from Ruby to Crystal to improve performance and resource usage.
  • Collaborate with Product engineers to build a data pipeline to support customer-facing metrics graphs.
  • Assist our customer support by triaging operational incidents and performing incident response.
The ideal engineer

We’re looking for someone experienced, who’s ready to dive in. You don’t need to be an Elasticsearch expert — you’ll learn all of that on the job. We’ll have plenty of conversations about how Lucene is really a data structures library optimized for disk access.

Experience with Java is more helpful, although C, C++ and Golang would be a good starting points. We’ll also be looking for solid fundamentals in networking, disk access, memory management, and schedulers.

Several of our systems make heavy use of Netty, as does Elasticsearch itself. So familiarity with Netty or evented systems will be helpful.

The ideal teammate

One More Cloud (OMC) is small, remote-first, and team-conscious.

OMC has always been comprised of a small team. As such, each of our colleagues wears many hats. We lack middle managers and dedicated Project Managers that slice and dice out work; OMC managers are also contributors. They serve as a sounding board and for coaching higher level project and career questions. Everyone is expected to manage projects together. So, our team works best with individuals who take responsibility for their to-do lists, and those who enjoy working collaboratively with teammates to plan out projects and don’t shy away from offering their opinions.

OMC has been a remote-first company from day one, and we have a lot of experience in managing and communicating across multiple timezones. One of our key ways of getting focused work done is eliminating too many meetings and video calls by writing out our thought processes, documenting steps we take, and sharing it with the team. Our ideal teammate should be comfortable with and undaunted at writing clear and logical longer-form English prose on a regular cadence.

We are team-conscious. Yes, we have a company hierarchy based on skills and the level of risk a position incurs (like responsibility for servers that have big costs attached to them). However, the onus is on every individual at OMC(regardless of hierarchy) to create a culture that allows a space for creativity, honesty, and autonomy for everyone who joins OMC. We don’t look for team heroes or martyrs but rather strive to create healthy and realistic team responsibility. We collaborate best with those who are considerate of their teammates, respect boundaries, and are dedicated to pursuing our work with curiosity, respect, and optimism.

About One More Cloud

OMC provides specialized hosted cloud services through two SAAS services: Websolr (websolr.com) and Bonsai (bonsai.io). We launched Websolr in 2009 as the first cloud hosted Solr as a service, and one of the very first batch of Heroku addons. Bonsai followed in 2012 as the first hosted Elasticsearch as a service on the market.

Our company is small, profitable, and independent. Our entire team, starting with the founders, is comprised of developers, engineers, scientists, and designers with a passion for providing useful tools and services for developers and businesses. As truth-seeking creatives and thinkers, we strive for excellence from design to execution.

We manage the search engines for ecommerce applications, social media sites, magazine archives, classifieds search, job boards and resume search, CRMs, content management systems, and more. We've been fortunate to serve teams at startups and established sites alike, such as Airbrake, Best Buy, Bullhorn, Couchsurfing, Ello, Fairfax Media, GitHub, Heroku, Muck Rack, OfferUp, Pinterest, Scripted, wikiHow, and more.

Benefits for working at OMC include:

  • Medical and Dental Insurance
  • 40 hour work week. We practice healthy work and life boundaries.
  • Work where you want. We're a remote-first company, and have been from day one since 2009.
  • 401k, with company contributions
  • Wellness allowances
  • Annual continuing education allowance
  • Paid parental leave

We pride ourselves on keeping apps working smoothly, and the codebase tidy and well-tested. We dedicate time for upgrades, refactoring and improvements in the developer experience.

For people with skills and interest, we offer possibilities to work on our Ember.js frontend too, enabling people to grow to a fullstack role. Equally, there are opportunities to learn and be involved in infrastructure, DevOps and serverless development.

  2. Technical interview. Qualified candidates proceed to our technical interview, where we ask more in-depth technical questions.
  3. Home assignment. We'll test your coding skills in building a small application. You can do this at home on your own time. The assignments usually take about 4-6 hours to complete.
  4. Assignment review and skills interview. After our team has reviewed your assignment, we invite you to the next interview. We'll provide feedback and ask questions about your code. This interview also includes some pair-programming, where we do some improvements or additional features to your project.

Castor Electronic Data Capture (EDC) is the core of our platform. It’s also our largest product in terms of customers and codebase, with thousands of researchers worldwide using our EDC to build their study databases and securely collect their research data.

The EDC team focuses on bringing clinical research into the 21st century. Together, the team contributes to developing exciting new features, powerful APIs that connect our platform to Electronic Health Records and complex algorithms to support versioning of study data and metadata.

We also want to be honest. With all this new code, the team also ‘get their hands dirty’ to resolve some of the technical debt we’ve been accumulating over the last few years.

Remote work

At Castor, our entire team is currently working from home. We’ve realised our regular office setup may not be practical in the months and, potentially, years to come.

Although this comes with new challenges, we are beginning to build a great remote working culture. We believe expanding our horizons and hiring on a remote basis is key to continuing on our mission of delivering faster, smarter medical research.

For that reason, this position is remote-only (from anywhere in similar working timezones). As we don’t have world-wide payrolling solutions in place, we expect that you have the capability to invoice us as a and can arrange your own taxes with your government.

What you’ll do

At Castor our stack, well...it's stacked! With PHP at it's heart, Castor EDC uses Doctrine, React, ExtJS and MySQL, runs on ansible- and terraform-managed infrastructure, builds via CircleCI, and is monitored via Tideways, NewRelic and Prometheus. To realise our vision and ensure that our products and tools embrace the frontier of innovation, you’ll:

  • Designing, debugging and coding for a growing network of medical researchers
  • Analysing performance data and optimising bottlenecks
  • Deconstructing user requirements to model optimal, scalable, solutions
  • Working on automated toolchains to construct and integrate our applications

What you’ll bring

A repertoire of coding comprehension! Being a skilled software engineer, you’ll know how to decrypt and improve a (legacy) codebase whilst keeping yourself abreast of current trends. You’ll have:

  • Significant practical experience with PHP, design patterns, OOP, and automated tests
  • Working knowledge of Javascript, preferably with React and/or Sencha ExtJS
  • Experience in building web-based applications (SaaS)
  • Knowledge of web security, common vulnerabilities and their mitigations
  • A creative mindset with the ability to help solve challenging domain problems

What you’ll learn

It’s a crucial time for Castor. We’re on ‘full power mode’ and scaling-up at an exponential rate. For you, the opportunities are endless:

  • How to build robust ‘bulletproof’ security which protects patients medical data
  • Working with a diverse group of developers from all over the world
  • To share your ideas openly and influence the growth of a true scale-up company
  • Be involved in maximising the impact of medical research and improving healthcare

How do we say thank you?

At Castor we truly live and breathe our core value, believing we can 'achieve anything with a healthy and happy team.' With this in mind, we encourage a truly flexible approach to working and time to rest. You can also use our company subscription to Calm for a little meditation or relax time. Of course, we also want to reward our Castorians for their impactful work, and so we offer compelling contractor rates.

Senior Software Development Engineer in Test
senior java python javascript ruby saas Jun 11

Contrast Security is the world’s leading provider of security technology that enables software applications to protect themselves against cyberattacks, heralding the new era of self-protecting software. Contrast's patented deep security instrumentation is the breakthrough technology that enables highly accurate assessment and always-on protection of an entire application portfolio, without disruptive scanning or expensive security experts. Only Contrast has sensors that work actively inside applications to uncover vulnerabilities, prevent data breaches, and secure the entire enterprise from development, to operations, to production.

About the Position

Contrast is looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to join our growing engineering team, based in our office locations: Los Altos, CA, Baltimore, MD, or Belfast. (potential for remote in U.S.)

Our engineering team has a strong spirit of entrepreneurship. Every member has joined us over our 6 year history because he/she wants to be part of a high-performing team and go through the scale up experience. We look for candidates who share similar goals and beliefs about the work and the team they want to be a part of.

Our test automation engineers believe the reward for a job well done is another job. You would rather spend your time enabling engineering teams to more effectively write their own tests than write tests for them. You thrive in an environment where there is something new to learn with each major effort.

You’ll be landing with an engineering team with the goal of improving their unit testing coverage.  Maybe they need help mocking services? Maybe they need help just refactoring a large group of tests during a system upgrade? Maybe they need help starting a load testing practice? Our teams will ask. You will research, implement and train. Always improving our test coverage and automation.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with multiple agile teams to establish automated test metric goals and achieve them.
  • Work with teams to set up processes, patterns and standards to increase unit test coverage
  • Work with teams to automate high value performance testing (benchmark, load and stress) and API contract testing
  • Working with the Ops teams to test infrastructure as code
  • Contribute to our synthetic test infrastructure, running against our production SaaS systems for real-time awareness of product uptime and functional stability.
  • Build and maintain expertise in several languages and their testing tool sets over time.
  • Work cross-functionally within a service team and be a core contributor in every significant engineering solution that is delivered
  • Solid understanding of system design, including the operational trade-offs of various designs
  • Solid programming and troubleshooting skills. You may be called upon to help with systems written in Java, .NET, Ruby, Go, Python and Javascript. You won’t be expected to know everything, but we are looking for people who can dig through a codebase for debugging and commit tactical fixes opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • You don't love writing code, you love writing code that tests the code.
  • You have 5+ years in technology with at least three in a QA Automation Role or SDET
  • You have a passion for automation – a key team goal is to reduce daily toil through automation.
  • You love to break things, and you like to share how you did it.
  • You can find your way around a database, but you are better at mocking them.
  • You can demonstrate familiarity with common language frameworks. Java is preferred to start, but .NET, Ruby, Go, Python and Javascript are also key to our product offering.
  • You have a desire to make the Internet a safer place.
  • You have a passion for tools, testing frameworks, methodologies and implementations. You choose them based on the best fit for the problem at hand.
  • You approach problems from a product perspective, thinking through how the user will interact with what you're building.
  • You have strong communication skills. You ask questions, let others know when you need help, and tell others what you need. You write things down so someone else on your team can do them.
  • You're a problem solver. You believe the best work results from finding the simplest solution to complex challenges. We see simplicity as the greatest expression of intelligence and responsibility.
  • You see the big picture. You understand how the code you write interacts with systems and services, both internally and externally.

What we offer:

  • Competitive Compensation
  • In-office Lunches
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits

This Year

Backend Engineer
ruby-on-rails backend saas Jun 09

HI, WE'RE COMPANYCAM

We create simple-to-use, visual-first communication and accountability tools for contractors. Imagine a B2B SaaS app that doesn’t look like garbage, built by a team of capable, laid back people. But don’t let the chill throw you off; we’re a fast-growing, product-led startup with big plans for the future.

THE ROLE

We’re looking for a sharp, self-motivated, problem-solving Backend Engineer to join our team.

Using your knowledge of Ruby on Rails, you’ll work alongside other engineers, designers, and product managers to tackle everything from huge company initiatives to modest but important bug fixes, from start to finish. You’ll also collaborate with the Product Team on discovery, helping to assess the feasibility of product changes. And, perhaps most importantly, you’ll actively contribute to the evolution of the culture and processes of a growing Engineering team.

WHY COMPANYCAM?

Did you wake up this morning with a burning desire to create apps for contractors? No? I didn’t think so. I admit, it’s not something one thinks about without some prompting. But bear with me for a moment...

Contractors are everywhere. They build our homes, they literally put roofs over our heads, they wire up our electricity, give us access to the internet, fix our plumbing and AC, paint our homes, the list goes on. At CompanyCam, you’ll work with intelligent, kind people to make contractors' work easier and create time for them, so they can get shit done and spend more time with their families. Sound corny? You’ll find that mid-westerner ethos permeate our culture (we’re based in Lincoln, NE), so if you can’t hang with that, no hard feelings, but this probably isn’t the role for you.

WORKING AT COMPANYCAM

Our Product and Engineering departments do things a little differently. We use Basecamp’s Shape Up method to organize and execute our work. That means you’ll work in 6-week cycles with a small team of one designer plus one or two other engineers on 1-3 projects, depending on their size.. Then, you’ll get a 1-2 week cool-down where you’ll pursue educational opportunities, work on pet projects, or smash some bugs that have been nagging at you. Rinse and repeat until code nirvana.

Sounds nice, right? No sprinting, no scrumming, no death by 1,000 meetings. We protect our engineer’s time, treat them like adults, and trust them to get their work done. We’re also big on not overworking people. Put in your eight hours and TURN. SLACK. OFF. No nights and weekends.

Our larger company culture is also refreshingly chill. We have fun, learn from each other, and don’t take ourselves too seriously. Read more about what it’s like here.

We cover the important stuff too. We pay well, offer unlimited vacationmeaningful equityhealth insurance, and other benefits. If you're local or down to move, we’re custom remodeling a new office space in the Lincoln Haymarket area that you’ll love. If you're remote (most of the engineering team is), we’re well set up to with great conference room video equipment so you feel like you’re there with us, and we’ll fly you in a few times a year to hang out (you CANNOT miss Lake Day!)

WHAT WE ASK OF YOU

Must-haves
These are our non-negotiables:

  • Show up: have the courage to do difficult but necessary stuff.
  • Grow up: take responsibility, learn continuously, and have a growth mindset
  • Do good: treat your co-workers and customers the way you want to be treated
  • Strong experience with and knowledge of Ruby on Rails

Nice-to-haves
Day to day, you’ll spend 90%+ of your time working in Ruby on Rails, but, of course, that’s not all you’ll work with. While experience with the following technologies are not required (we’re cool with some on-the-job learning), you will see them with varying levels of frequency:

  • GraphQL & REST
  • PostgreSQL
  • Redis
  • AWS services (S3, EC2, etc)
  • ElasticSearch
  • MongoDB

This position can be U.S. Remote or in our Lincoln office. At least one year of remote experience is required if you plan on working remotely. We are not accepting applicants outside the U.S. at this time.
